Driving Bit by Bit for Trauma

I am a trauma survivor - although I didn't just 'survive' trauma, I thrived.  I made it through and am now an example of the possibility of healing and recovery after trauma.  The journey to healing is not short or simple - there are hurdles to jump, dark caverns to navigate and deep currents to cross.

I was not responsible for the traumatic experiences I endured, but in 2011 during a very dark time in my life, I realized that I was certainly responsible for whatever I did with that experience from that day forward.  I had three choices: sink, tread water or swim to the shore and do something with my pain.  The choice wasn't as easy to make as you might think.  Trauma changes you.  It can change how you think, how you view the world and how you view yourself in it.  Life can feel very unsafe.  Trauma can strangle every ounce of air inside your lungs and can seem insurmountable to get through, over and around. As much as my family and friends wanted me to get better, it was only me that could turn the key to that door of recovery.  So, I made the choice to fight, to heal and to learn how to live life after trauma.

That brings me to this new adventure – which I am excited to share with all of you and ask for your support.

For the past year I have been volunteering with Bit by Bit, a Charitable Organization under Assists Projects that strives to increase awareness of trauma and PTSD, raising funds for bursaries and other recovery opportunities for trauma survivors.  Bit by Bit offers an educational trauma training program called TASC (Trauma Awareness Skills Courses). Through skilled TASC Trainers, in a two-day workshop environment, anyone (not in crisis) can learn what trauma is, how to support someone who has been through trauma and how to build resiliency, coping tools and community resources.  With TASC, organizations and businesses can learn about trauma and implement protocols and best-practice methods in preparing their employees if they work in an environment that sees trauma on the job (like first responders). Think about most workplaces today and how they require you to complete first aid training – this is emotional first aid training and it can help to save a life, maybe even your own.

‘Driving Bit by Bit for Trauma’ is a fundraising event with all funds raised going to Bit by Bit and I will be driving through Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia beginning on November 24 in Toronto. I will be sharing my personal experiences as a trauma survivor and share my passion for trauma education, awareness and suicide prevention while raising funds for Bit by Bit, a Registered Charitable Organization that strives to increase awareness of trauma, PTSD and provides trauma education training through the TASC program.

If you’re able – please consider making a donation to this event.  You can donate securely on this site and can even donate by using a debit card.
