In memory of Grant Allan (Sunrise: 18/01/84. Sunset: 25/11/18)

On Sunday 25th November 2018, the world lost one of its brightest souls - our wonderful son, brother,  nephew, cousin, uncle and friend Grant Allan.

Although Grant's life has been tragically cut short after an accident, he lived an incredible life that made a lasting impression on the people that had the pleasure of coming into contact with him.

It would seem that those whose light shines twice as bright, sadly live half as long. Grant’s inner light shone thrice as bright.

I , for one, feel grateful and privileged to have had, and called Grant, a friend.  He was an incredible, kind soul that made me a better person for knowing him. Grant’s zest for life was contagious and he always looked on the bright side of life no matter what. Ever modest about his achievements, he always hid his light under a bushel going about his business quietly and humbly. His free spirit and enduring positive mental attitude shone through regardless of the adversities that faced him throughout his life. As you know, Grant was deaf and despite this he never let it hold him back by achieving great things in his life time and always helped and put others above everything else. North East Sensory Services which help deaf and blind people achieve independence supported Grant throughout his life.  Grant's life was enhanced when he received a cochlear implant last October which allowed him to hear fully. Grant lip read and had recently studied  British Sign Language at the Aberdeen College.

An active member of the Aberdeen community Grant raised lots of money for charities by sponsored running and volunteering for charities that were close to his heart. Such charities as Momentum Skills, Rosie's Social Enterprises and Community Food Initiative North East (CFINE).  Grant also volunteered regularly for Peacock Visual Arts events. Ever selfless, as a teenager Grant volunteered for a charity mission in Chile, South America which helped disabled people in wheelchairs climb mountains. Please contact me if he was involved with others as he was always involved in so many charity fundraisers it was hard to keep track!

Grant was a member of the Metro Aberdeen Running Club and loved running free with them. The positive effects of running were evident to see in Grant and running suited his sunny disposition to a tee and he made lots of good friends at the club. He loved the outdoors and being in nature; hiking up munros and snowboarding down Canadian mountains! Grant was a very peaceful, calm person and enjoyed attending his sister Mhairi and brother-in-law Roy’s yoga classes which helped balance his body and mind. Grant also loved animals and was often seen running around the Duthie Park with a friend’s dog in tow! He was a big Dons supporter and Manchester United fan - red suited Grant. With his distinctive red hair worn either long or short or tied in a top-knot and 'occasional' ginger moustache and beard, Viking Grant was a man of many disguises and unmissable in Aberdeen!

I, and many others had found a kindred spirit in Grant and will miss him immensely.

Grant touched many people's lives in so many positive ways. Please consider donating to support his family and to help keep Grant's wonderful spirit alive, in the hope that we can continue Grant’s  great charity fundraising that he achieved in his lifetime into the future.

Thank you for reading.

Namaste.

EDITED UPDATE @ 20:30  - 09/12/18

We have received word that Grant's funeral will be held on Monday 17th December at 2.45 pm at the Hazlehead Crematorium.

A massive THANK YOU to all of Grant's family and friends for their generous donations of £1020 raised since starting Grant's fundraiser on 27th November, surpassing our target of £500. We are completely overwhelmed with the messages of love and support for Grant.

The EE have written an article about Grant's fundraising appeal on the 3rd December edition:

The Evening Express wrote a tribute article to Grant in the 28th November newspaper and an online article. Thank you to the Metro Aberdeen Running Club for contacting the EE acknowledging Grant's passing and giving him the recognition he deserved. Lorna, Grant's mum and half-sister Mhairi, Donald Ross from CFINE, Ane Smith from Peacock Visual Arts and Chris Richardson from Metro, have all given a lovely tribute to Grant, and Dale Haslam from the EE has written a beautiful and sympathetic account of Grant and his life:

The Scottish Sun newspaper has written an article about Grant in the 30th November edition:

A few friends have been in contact regarding what charities we look to support with the money raised so far.  The donations raised will be passed on to Grant's family. It will be left with them to decide what happens with the money regarding any charitable donations or any memorials that they want to dedicate in Grant's memory.

We hope that we can continue to spread the  word about how great a person Grant was and that with our help he can continue to achieve great things for charity posthumously.
