While we describe our work as “digging at the roots of hunger,” it would be more accurate to say that Growing Gardens digs at the roots of poverty, racism, and inequality. Yes, learning how to grow a vegetable garden does provide better access to food, but this seemingly simple act has a far-reaching power to transform lives.
Your experience as a gardener becomes contagious. You talk to your neighbors, share produce, and have meals together. Couple that with improved health from greater activity and better nutrition. This allows you to do better in school, your network and connections grow, and even job opportunities open up.

In the words of one of our program participants, "... growing food has changed our lives. Growing Gardens helped me feed my family. I’m very proud to have a garden of my own. It is like heaven.”
In 2015, our Home Gardens program built gardens for 51 new families and supported 81 more families in their second and third years. We distributed 3,500 plant starts and over 4,000 seeds. More than 300 volunteers contributed nearly 1,500 hours to build gardens, mentor beginning gardeners, grow plant starts, teach classes, and more.According to our end of year surveys of Home Gardeners:
 86% of families increased their daily fruit & vegetable consumption as a result of their garden
 86% saved money on food as a result of their garden
 32% decreased the number of emergency food boxes used as a result of their garden
