Hello friends, family, and fellow conservationists!
My name is Mackenzie Mossing and I am on a mission to save the worlds remaining wildlife. While completing an undergraduate degree in Animal Science at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, my eyes were opened to an array of problems facing wildlife around the globe. Instead of standing by and watching endangered species disappear during what is now known as the 6th great extinction, I have decided to take action. My first step was completing a 7 week volunteer internship at the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia during the summer of 2014. For that trip, I raised over $3,000 which went directly towards saving the worlds remaining 10,000 cheetahs.
Now, I am headed back to my favorite continent
this time to help in the fight to save African Elephants. Recently I received the exciting news that I will be traveling to Samburu, Kenya in early January to complete a 7 week internship with Save the Elephants , the world's leading organization spearheading this battle. But I need your help!
Every twenty minutes an Elephant is killed in Africa
for their ivory tusks. That's more than 35,000 a year!
If we do not do our part to protect these animals, they will be gone within the next few decades, a tragic failure to all of humanity. Elephants are among the most intelligent and sensitive animals on the planet, known for their strongly bonded families and their ability to empathize deeply with one another. The poaching epidemic and ivory trade has been tearing these families apart, leaving behind a dwindling population of elephants.
However, not all hope is lost!
Save the Elephants has been combining research, protection, and education for over 20 years with the goal of securing a future for elephants. Recently, STE and the Wildlife Conservation Network joined together to create the Elephant Crisis Fund, which is funding projects world-wide to stop poaching, thwart trafficking, and end the demand for ivory.
Why me?
My entire life has been molded by a fierce love for all animals, both domestic and wild. When I was younger, I would frequently "operate" on my stuffed animals and dreamed of one day becoming a veterinarian. I stuck with that dream until my second year as an undergraduate when I became aware that there are plenty of people who want to become veterinarians, but not enough people who want to save wildlife. I first fell in love with Africa, its people, and most especially its wildllife during a trip to Kenya in December 2012. After returning for the summer of 2014 where I captured the pictures above, I came to the realization that I had found my calling: to preserve our beautiful planet and all of its wildlife. Now that I have graduated with a degree in Animal Science, I am moving towards my goal of becoming a wildlife conservationist.
50% of the remaining species on this planet will be gone within 100 years if we do nothing.
This means that animals like the elephant will become just another part of history books, like the mammoths and the dinosaurs.
We have a universal responsibility to prevent this from happening!
The world is in desperate need of people who are willing to dedicate their lives to saving what remains of Earth's wilderness. I have gladly decided to take on this responsibility. I cannot insist that all of you do the same, but I can ask that you support me. The work I will be doing in Samburu for Save the Elephants will be on a volunteer basis. That being said, there are some costs that I need to cover before I depart! This is your chance to support my mission and most importantly to support the elephants. Friends and family, think of this as the best Christmas present you could possibly give me.
Costs
Round trip airfair from SFO-Nairobi=1400
Domestic flights from Nairobi-Samburu=400
Internship fee=1800 (donation that goes directly to Save the Elephants and their projects)
Immunizations=300
TOTAL: 3900
BUT WE CAN DO BETTER!
I am hoping to exceed this goal so that I can make an additional donation to Save the Elephants, where I will be able to see first hand the allocation of those funds.
Thank you!
This is just the beginning of my journey, one that would be impossible if I couldn't rely on the support of people like you. Help me to ensure a future for our wildlife so that generations to come can also appreciate the beauty of nature before it is lost forever.
