Knitting Hats for the Homeless

Donation protected
The Highland Ridge Knitters are a group of senior citizens that make hats, scarves, and headbands for homeless people throughout the Midwest. The project began in 2011 and has produced over 6000 hats and dozens of scarves and headbands.  At first, the project was set up to provide hats to Iowa's homeless veterans, but it has since expanded to distribute hats, scarves, and headbands to various organizations throughout multiple states in the midwest who provide them to the homeless.  The knitters work year-round entirely with donated yarn and distribute the products as the weather turns cold. The problem that they frequently have is a shortage of yarn.

Last December, when visiting my parents at the Highland Ridge senior community, I made a surprize delivery: a car load of donated yarn. The knitters were thrilled! “We couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas gift!” they said. This year I’d like to make an even larger delivery and am attempting to fill a pickup truck with yarn. All of the funds raised with go toward the purchase of yarn, and will be delivered to the knitters in December.

Not only is the end result something that helps those in need, but it’s a good activity to keep the seniors citizens busy, and it gives them a great feeling knowing they are helping those in need.

Thank you for your support!
