Save Hotel Jeffery!

Donation protected
On November 12th 2014 at 1:00 in the morning owner of the Hotel Jeffery, Sara Zahn, was awakened with a nightmare of all too real proportions; fire. Fortunately, the guests of hotel Jeffery were few, a lone couple that was staying there was simultaneously aware of the danger arising and called authorities. In a whirlwind of a short but seemingly forever morning, fire destroyed a piece of California history. More than history the hotel is the gem of Coulterville, the livelihood of many, and a destination for the world.

There are few but precious upsides to this unfortunate situation; no one was hurt, the fire men and women were able to save many antiques and historical relics amongst the chaos, and the Saloon survived unscathed. There is no way we will be able to repay the efforts of Cal fire and Mariposa county Fighters, if it was not for their efforts, Hotel Jeffery would be dust in the wind, a total and complete loss. So the up to the downside is the Jeffery can survive…….

This is where we enter a quagmire of good efforts, intentions and reality of coverage sets in. In short, the insurance coverage while estimated at a complete loss, doesn’t cover everything, actually, far short. We are asking for the generosity of others, YOU.  Now is your chance to help invest in California’s history. Even the smallest donation to our Gofundme will make a huge difference in rebuilding the hotel. The insurance is likely to cover the gutting of the Hotel, meaning, the damage haul away which is more than extensive, but that’s about it.  What was not structurally destroyed by fire was hit with major water damage. Throughout the whole hotel, on all three floors, water and smoke damage wreaked havoc just as malicious as the fire did to the rest. We are not covered for the real cost of restoring a historical site which is estimated above the million mark. We will have to rebuild the structural fire damage, tear out soaked walls and floors, and replace soft goods like mattresses that soaked up smoke like a sponge, and replace industrial kitchen supplies etc. Any donation, big or small will help make a huge difference in the legacy of the Jeffery.

Hotel Jeffery’s immediate Future; We want to get the Magnolia Saloon, California’s oldest bar up and running as soon as possible! Once power and plumbing issues are resolved (within a week or two) we invite you to come enjoy some spirits while the hotel side is under construction.

This Gofundme project is administrated and written by Eli Swanberg-Kerns with permission by my mother-in-law Sara Zahn, proprietor of Hotel Jeffery.
