Help in the wake of murder

In mid-September 2016, our mother Elvira Segura was murdered in her own home by her tenant Robert Mondrian-Powell. In the following few days, he calmly held a yard sale outside to sell her possessions while her body decomposed inside.

After the yard sale, he stole her car and vanished. The car was found abandoned in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This led to the discovery of her body and ultimately to Robert Mondrian-Powell’s arrest. He confessed and is currently being arraigned for trial for 2nd degree murder, among other charges.

The unfolding of the events starting with her death has been unbelievably difficult for our family and close friends. On top of the shock and grief, we’ve been faced with a host of expenses. For example, her house needs to be cleaned and repaired, as the nature of the crime left several rooms contaminated. We are reluctant to ask for help, but we’ve stretched ourselves beyond our financial means to cover the many costs so far.

Mom had recently retired and lived on her own, with Mondrian-Powell as a tenant for several years. We spoke with her often - she was happy to be done with work, and constantly quilting and crafting for everyone in her life. She would tell us in every conversation about her hopes for us and her grandchildren.

We will always remember our mom lighting up with joy and wearing her heart on her sleeve. Everyone who knew her remembers her beaming warmth, her intelligence, and her passion. She is achingly missed by everyone whose life she touched. We would ultimately like to hold a proper service for her in the summer. Please help us settle her affairs and lay her to rest with dignity.
