Kayla's GIVE trip around the world

"We travel, initially, to lose ourselves, and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again-to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more." -Pico Iyer

Hey there! I first want to thank you for visiting my page. I know there's a lot of these around, and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to see what I have to say; whether you are a close friend, an acquaintance, or you don't even know me, I thank you.
If you don't know me, my name is Kayla Casey. I am currently in my sophomore year at Northern Arizona University. I was born and raised in Phoenix and I attended Seton Catholic Preparatory High School. Seton Catholic is where my story starts. During the summer leading into my sophomore year of high school, one of the required summer reading books was Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza, a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. Reading about how much Immaculee and her family and friends valued their education made me want to become an English teacher in Africa. I have since reread Immaculee's story multiple times, and I have had the opportunity to hear her speak and to meet her. She is truly an inspiration to me. This past summer, I was able to take a step towards my goal of supporting the education system in Africa; I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Tanzania, more specifically, the island of Zanzibar, thanks to an organization called GIVE Volunteers (www.givevolunteers.org). During my two weeks in the village of Cairo, I spent lots of time getting to know the locals and learning about their way of life, while teaching English and (sort of) helping build a school. We also got to do fun stuff around the island and country and we really got to learn about life in Tanzania, in Zanzibar, and in the village of Cairo. For those of you who haven't already gotten the hour-long rundown of my trip, I will spare you the details and just tell you that it was the most amazing, most inspirational, most incredible, most eye-opening, and most life-changing experience I have had. My time in Zanzibar taught me how to be selfless. I know that I made a difference during my time in Cairo, and I know that Cairo and the wonderful people who live there left a lasting impact on my heart; they taught me so much about myself, and I have since vowed to change the way I live my life. I vow to stop taking things for granted, to live life more simply, and to be grateful for the things and the people I do have in my life.

Ever since I returned, I have been desperately hoping to go back. Let me tell you, nothing beats living the island life, while also knowing that you are making a difference in the world. I ask that you consider helping me return to Zanzibar with GIVE, so that I can continue to help educate the wonderful people of Cairo, and help them reach their goals. I know it may seem like a lot to ask, but every little bit counts. I'm not setting a time limit, although my goal is to go back to Tanzania by the summer of 2017. However, the quicker I can raise the money, the sooner I can return to Zanzibar, and the more money I raise, the more I can help.

I can not begin to explain how much this means to me; no matter what the size of your donation, or even if you just took the time to read my story and passed it on, I would like to thank you for your support. I would also like to thank my wonderful parents for their neverending support, and GIVE Volunteers for their continued efforts to improve education and the way of life in Tanzania, Nicaragua, and Thailand.
