Dr. Mindy’s Hey, You!

www.heyyouadhd.com

Barber, teacher, consultant, and entrepreneur… what a crazy eclectic career path. Each has been rewarding and filled with life lessons. First and foremost, that people are constantly searching for solutions. From a new hairstyle to the appropriate academic intervention for their child, they are asking for help. Hence my current status as president and creator of Hey, You!, where we create task completion solutions for families living with ADHD.

As a special education teacher of 20 years, I’ve heard countless parents report that their child’s ADHD caused stress and chaos in their homes. It created a toxic atmosphere filled with yelling, threats, bribery and tears.  Hey, You! was created to provide tools for parents similar to the techniques I used as a teacher.  I made timely efficient task completion of daily routines our goal to ease the stress and pain that was etched on the parents faces.

Infectious fun for the whole family...

Hey, You! songs are designed to help parents and children complete daily living skills through consistent verbiage, rhythm and movement. Our songs provide step-by-step directions that walk the children through the task. Parent monitoring ensures that the child consistently completes the routine. Consistency and repetition are the keys to habit formation, and rhythm and rhyme makes it infectious fun for the family.

Why does Hey, You! work…

Consistency and repetition are key neurological and cognitive components of habit formation. But in order to help parents and children understand this complex process, I created the ‘messy drawers’ analogy to make the concept concrete. Think of your brain as a chest of drawers. In it you have a drawer for everything you learn from facts to routines. You use your five senses to investigate the world and fill up your drawers with what you find. If everything is working correctly, you gather information, send it to your brain, and put it away in the correct drawer. When you need the information to answer questions or complete a task, you open the correct drawer and take it out.

Unfortunately not everyone has neat drawers.

Sometimes the information enters your head and is put in the wrong drawer - or it may not even make it to the drawer. It can also land on top or under the dresser because something else attracts your attention. Now you have to scramble around and look everywhere for what you need.

Solution…Practice putting everything into the right drawer!

This analogy provides a practical approach to understanding how deficits can be remediated at home and school. It also simplifies habit formation. As one student told a classmate when asked why he was going to me for instruction, “My draws are messy and Dr. McNeal’s going to help me clean them up.” Simply put, our app helps children find the stuff in their drawers!

The Hey, You! app is designed to provide parents with the consistency and repetition their children need to complete  daily routines through motor memory, rhythmic memory and  neural patterning. We have three routines up and running on the Hey, You! ADHD
app:
Get Up, Get Dressed, Get Going
Now I Lay Me Down To  Sleep                                              Splish Splash Time to take a Bath
