Help Finish Hike the Divide Film

Trailer by Cassie Goodluck-Johnson

We are so excited to share Hike the Divide with you. Some of you have been following along from the start in late 2015, when this was all just a concept and I didn’t even how to navigate with map and compass, let alone how to navigate the film-making process (If you're just now discovering us, visit our website - hikethedivide.com - for more info on the film). So much has happened since then, including countless hours of brainstorming, writing, editing, panicking, arguing with governmental bureaucrats… and over 2,700 miles of hiking, of course. Here we are, nearly two years after I reached the US-Mexico border, with the release of our film in sight. We need your help to get to the finish line, though.

We are sending out our rough cut for review this week; in addition to any changes we make based on that feedback, we have some post-production work left to do (as you may be able to tell from the trailer). We need to bring someone on to master the sound, we need to color correct, and we have some graphics and basic animation work to do. Once this is all completed, we’ll be doing a series of community screenings, and then uploading the film to Vimeo.com.

Our superstar editing team has been working at $15/hr – well below their normal rates – because they believe in the film’s message. I’ve not paid myself a single cent throughout the entire process. Despite all that, we’ve overshot our modest budget. In order to get this film wrapped up and out into the world, we need to raise an additional $3,000.

I’ve had conversations about climate with people of many different backgrounds. One of the sentiments I hear most frequently is the desire to take action but not knowing where to begin. Contributing to the completion of our film is a great way to wade into supporting action on climate. Don't want to pitch in? Would you instead be willing to share this campaign with others and on social media?

Maybe you make your living in ways that wouldn’t be categorized as particularly “climate friendly.” That’s true for most of us, myself included. Such is the reality of 21st century consumer-capitalist society. Maybe you bank with JP Morgan-Chase, or any of the other mega banks notorious for funding leaky pipelines. Maybe you drill oil wells or sit on the board of an oil and gas corporation. Maybe you have to commute daily through bumper-to-bumper traffic. Many of the ways that everyday people like us contribute to climate change are largely out of our control, and I’m not here to tell you how to live your life, but here's a hard truth: if wrecking the planet is wrong, so is profiting off that wreckage. Maybe, while we all wrestle with that, you could redirect some of that ill-gotten resource towards efforts to stabilize climate and regenerate the planet. How about through Hike the Divide?

Whatever your political inclinations are, there is no denying that our current administration is eroding our environmental protections and working to undermine efforts to curb climate change and prepare communities for its impacts. A rallying cry has risen, urging us to turn our focus from the federal level to the states we live in: “that’s where real change happens.” I’d argue for narrowing our focus even more. Change happens within our communities. Hike the Divide promotes local solutions and encourages communities to decide for themselves which strategies and actions to pursue in order to secure a livable future. If that resonates with you, I encourage you to help us get this film to completion and onto screens around the world.

Hike the Divide focuses on the positive: agency, hope, radical imagination. Right now, though, I want to talk about the future we’re on track for. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has just put us on warning: we have 12 years to prevent climate chaos. If you ask me, the IPCC is consistently too reserved when it comes to the wording of their reports, as well as their prescribed solutions. So if they’re using the language of collapse, we can know that the situation is dire. We’re looking at some dramatic changes no matter what. Don’t we want a say in what those changes look like?

I do. So do the people you’ll meet in Hike the Divide. But you’ll only meet them if we can get this film wrapped. We need to raise an additional $3,000 to get our film to the screen. Today I’m asking if you can contribute to that effort; in doing so, you’re voting for a future that we choose rather than looming catastrophe.
