Holiday Community Meal + Sock Drive

Winter is a time of year where life naturally becomes more challenging: the sun moves farther away, our days grow shorter and our nights longer. Our focus shifts toward gathering around home, hearth and sharing our abundance with those we care about. For individuals and families facing homelessness and/or hunger, the holiday season can be particularly difficult.

 We’d like to help: we are a group of people who live and work in Old Town and the greater Humboldt area who want to offer kindness during these times. There are nearly 700 people living without homes in Eureka alone (estimated half of Humboldt county’s homeless population) and 1 in 8 people in the Unites States struggles with hunger. Meanwhile, we live in a society with an alarming over-abundance of food, supplies, and clothing. Our wish is to creatively resource, repurpose and redistribute these materials by utilizing our community connections. As a newly formed group, our first event (Thanksgiving) was such a great success that we are inspired to organize many more events to come. Our first step in that venture, is the upcoming Holiday Community Meal and we need your help!

 Our vision for this event is to provide hot food, beverages, useful items and meaningful interaction on Christmas Day at the Gazebo in Old Town from Noon to 3:00 (2nd and F Streets). We estimate that we will feed about 150 people. Monetary donations will go toward food and beverage costs, material costs, and equipment rental to accomplish our goal.

Also, we have a Donation List of things we are gathering that will give away to those who may be in need, and an Event-Needs List, of items that we would prefer to borrow/source locally. 

We wholeheartedly thank you in advance for your generosity and helping us to put on this event. We believe in the power that we have to affect change and to connect with our community in deeper and more meaningful ways.
