MY STORY

Hi, my name is Destiny Buron, I’m the chef and owner of Home Street Home. Seven years ago I quit my corporate job, cashed in my 401k and became a proud food truck owner. I always dreamed of opening a neighborhood cafe to share my love of cooking with you year round. A year ago I decided to start the journey, and what a journey it’s been.

I’ve lived on the West Side of St. Paul for the past eleven years. My aim is to create an inclusive space for the community, that serves locally sourced scratch made food, employs people from the neighborhood, and is proudly run by a female chef and small business owner born and raised in this great city. Currently, there’s nothing else like it on the West Side. I’ve met so many neighbors who can’t wait for Home Street Home Cafe to get up and running. Their passion and support has fueled me to keep my dream alive.

THE BUILDING

The building I found to call home is over a hundred years old. Since Home Street Home is all about community, I was thrilled to breathe new life into this historic building and save it from vacancy. In order to honor its heritage, it needed a lot more work than I could have possibly known. One of the biggest and most important tasks was building a modernized, fully accessible, gender neutral bathroom. We want everyone to feel at home here, which means creating a space where everyone is welcome.

My family has lent a hand every step of the way, from painting and construction to the photos and video you see above. With their help, I’ve been able to make every penny pack a punch. But, because of all the unforeseen circumstances I’ve spent my entire budget, all of my savings, and sadly even had to sell the truck.

CHALLENGES

From construction delays to zoning costs I’ve hit every roadblock I could imagine, plus plenty I couldn’t. I still have some road to cover on my journey, but my destination is within reach. Without a helping hand, I can’t open the cafe.

Any donation made will be used to help me pay for the zoning and licensing costs, secure the rest of the equipment I need, and finish construction. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the moral support I’ve received so far. Your help would mean the world to me and my family.

There’s nothing I’d like more than for the Home Street Home Cafe to be part of your life. To be the place you grab coffee and a bite to get you through a busy day, where you bring your co-workers for lunch, where you grab a glass of wine with your best friend, where you relax at dinner with a local tap beer, or when you’re too tired to cook and are in need of a scratch made meal to take home to your family. We’ll be here for your all your special occasions. I can’t wait for this place to mean a lot to you, because this community means a lot to me.
