Life & death in Aleppo: A call for help

Two Syrian activists will be trekking into the heart of the Syrian struggle, guided by famed rebel fighter from Libya Matthew VanDyke.

Their goal is to bring aid into the ailing parts of Aleppo and Idlib. This aid will include food and medicines. Along their way they will also help Nour Kelze, a young female activist in Syria, open a media center in Aleppo. This media center will serve as a hub of news gathered from all over Aleppo. It will also host and guide any foreign journalists visiting Aleppo.

The bulk of this money will be for food and medicines needed most. The medicines will be dispersed to field hospitals throughout Aleppo. Food and monetary aid will also be dispersed to residents of Aleppo and Idlib. A smaller portion of the money will be allocated to purchase equipment for the media center, including communications equipment, computers, appliances, and improvements to the facility.

The activists will operate with complete transparency. The amount of money collected will be publicly documented. Any and all receipts of purchase will also be made public. This will allow you to see that all of your donations are going directly towards helping people in dire need.

Not a dollar raised by this fundraiser will go towards overhead: Layth and Racan will be responsible for their own expenses. Rest assured that your donations will go towards helping the people that need it.

About the activists:

Matthew VanDyke is a documentary filmmaker who gained notoriety while fighting with rebel forces during the Libyan revolution. He was captured during a reconnaissance mission and imprisoned by the Gaddafi regime for nearly 6 months in solitary confinement as a prisoner of war. After his escape from prison he remained in Libya and returned to his service in the rebel forces, fighting in combat until Libya was free before returning to America. Recently, Matthew spent a month with the Free Syrian Army fighters in Aleppo shooting a documentary about the Syrian revolution. After returning from his trip to Syria, Matthew has been hard at work publicizing the suffering of the Syrian people.

Layth AlMidani is a Syrian American activist and college student. He has been active at fundraisers, protests, and other events calling for the freedom of Syria for the bulk of the last two years. Prior to his activism he was a supporter of the Assad regime until he experienced the oppression and injustice first hand. Layth has been inside Syrian on three separate occasions during the revolution, returning from his most recent trip less than a month ago.

Racan Alhoch is a Syrian-American activist and a college student. He attended one of the first anti-government demonstrations in the United States at the start of the Syrian revolution. He has been actively speaking at and organizing events for Syria all over the East Coast for the last two years. Racan has also written op-eds about Syria and is especially active on social media networks using them to collect donations, spread awareness, and connect with other activists.
