WHAT IS OUT OF THE BOX?

It’s a project by ten students from Michigan State University studying journalism, advertising, design, and video production. We’re part of the Media Sandbox, the creative curriculum and community in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences.

Last year we embarked on a 1402-mile road trip, stopping in Indianapolis, Nashville, Dallas, and Austin. We spent one day with a non profit organization in each city to help them with their creative needs — web design, branding, social media, video work, and more. Our goal was to get “out of the (sand)box” and into the real world to discover how creativity connects us.

THE PLAN
This year, we are rebranding one nonprofit: The Disabled Traveler. Our team is creating a new website, logo and social media pages for them so that their information on handicap accessibility can be easily accessed by the public. Besides the rebranding, we’re heading out west to Zion and Bryce national parks over our spring break (March 6-16) to document each park’s accessibility features. This includes:

Photography of handicap accessible features
Interactive maps of accessible trails and attractions
A print brochure
A community hike to raise awareness for national park accessibility

THE DISABLED TRAVELER
The Disabled Traveler is the principal resource for physically disabled traveling in national parks and beyond. The goal is to remove much of the unknown in our national parks that concerns visitors with a disability or age related difficulties. They accomplish this by photographing national parks and their disability access, as well as gathering information about handicap accessibility. The nonprofit is run by Ron Wilmers, his wife Kay, with photography by his son Roger. Visit their current website at www.tdtcompanion.com

WHERE WE NEED HELP
A trip out west is expensive, and we need every bit of help to get to Zion and Bryce.

Lodging: $1,500
Two rental cars: $1,650
Gas: $1,810
Airfare: $5,860
Food: $1,000
TOTAL: $11,820

We want the national parks to be more handicap accessible, and the only way to do that is to take the steps to make change. Any donations to help this cause are greatly appreciated.
