Jason Macom Project Tokyo

My name is Jason Macom. I am a track cyclist from Little Rock, AR. In the summer of 2015 I lost my right leg, below the knee from complications sustained from a traumatic ankle fracture. Less than two years after amputation I made the Team USA Roster for the 2017 Para-Cycling Track World Championships.

The day I received my first walking prosthetic I went straight home, suited up, and rode my bicycle. It was on a stationary trainer, but I was still riding my bike which was something I wasn’t sure I’d ever get to do again. I knew I had a lot of work to do physically, but didn’t realize the challenges I was in for until then. Although I was elated to be pedaling, I could not pedal the bike very well.

Cycling prosthetic components don’t exist and there are no published or shared processes to setting one up. I reached out to everyone I could find that was using a cycling prosthetic, but they could not provide me with protocol or process to help me and my prosthetist create a prosthesis that would get me back to racing. So, I took on the task to figure it out and committed to share the information with anyone that asked or would listen.

My cycling prosthesis and bicycle modifications are in the final stages of development and I am at the point of publishing my research to the prosthetic industry and amputee community. I hope to use my racing results to back up the scientific research.

At the 2017 Track World Championships I placed 4th in the 1 Kilometer Time Trial, just off the podium. Unlike before, I have gone all in with my training and preparation for this event. My hopes and dreams are of being a Gold medal contender at future World Championships and ultimately at the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

In order for me to continue my Paralympic journey I must race and qualify at two events in the coming months. These events are self-funded which include entry fees, travel, hotels, equipment and time away from work.
