Johnson Family Needs Your Help

This is very hard for us to do, so forgive me (Lindsay) if our story is all over the place. We are starting this gofundme as our very last option as we were advised by a bankruptcy lawyer to seek out every single option before meeting with him again. He was very honest with us and said we really don't want to file bankruptcy. So how did we get to where we are? Here's our story:
We are Perry and Lindsay Johnson and have been together about 10 years...married for almost 9. There are several kids between us, 3 (ages 16, 8 and 6) who live in our house full-time. We started struggling financially back in 2014 when my dad passed away and I lost my job 2 months after that. At the time, losing my job was not the greatest concern as we were all grieving a tremendous loss. A lot has happened since that time, but we have managed to keep moving forward despite it all.
Fast forward to now: We purchased our current home in October 2016. Finding this house when we did, being approved for it and everything was perfect timing. It was the fresh start we needed and this is the first house that feels like a home since losing my dad. Our younger kids were upset initially about moving schools, but they have adjusted well and love where they are now. Shortly after moving in, things kinda went downhill with Perry's job that greatly affected his pay even though he was assured it would not. Unfortunately, me going back to work is not an option for personal and medical reasons.
Yes, we have made some bad financial decisions and we completely own those mistakes. As soon as we started falling behind on our house payments, we contacted our mortgage company to see what we can do. They were extremely helpful and said all we had to do was complete a loss mitigation packet and once it went through we'd be good. As soon as the packet came in, we completed it and sent it back. We waited and waited and waited and never heard anything back so we called about it. These back and forth conversations have been going on now for almost 8 months and they have done nothing to help us. We call them nonstop and we're told something different by someone different every time. We've sent in every single document they've asked us to, we had to redo the entire packet because apparently they "lost" our first one, we had to resend several other documents because they said the first ones had "expired" etc. Even though we continue to send them everything they ask us to, they continue to come back and say "it's not a completed packet." At one point we sent in a house payment, then we were told not to because the payment wouldn't be applied to the correct month and it would negatively affect the months we were trying to get help for. Extremely long story short, we are now about to lose our home and it's very apparent that our mortgage company is not going to help us as we continuously jump through their hoops.
We are now so far behind that we have no idea what to do and it's a constant worry/stress on us individually and on our marriage. Unbeknownst to us, our house was put up for auction last month. I had just spoke with our mortgage company the week before and was assured we won't lose our home, then we find out it's being auctioned from a family member who happened to see it online. Thankfully that auction was cancelled, but now we really have no idea what's going on and we're trying everything we can to not lose our home...our kids home.
We tried fixing this when it was a $4,000 problem, but unfortunately it's now an almost $20,000 problem and we're lost, because we know our time is limited here if we don't come up with the money. Not to mention, our credit is completely screwed now so getting approved for some kind of loan is not possible and getting approved for another home or somewhere else to live wouldn't be easy either.
Asking for help and putting this out there is personally embarrassing and absolutely the last thing we want to do, because we know there are so many people out there with way worse problems, but we've also been told this is our very last option. We can't lose our home. We are asking for any and all help financially. It would mean the world to us and I know our kids would be grateful too. If you can't donate, we understand that too...please pray for us. We appreciate everyone's support! Thank you!
