Journey From A Small Town

Donation protected
On Feb. 11, 2017, our LifeSmarts team participated in the state LifeSmarts competition. LifeSmarts is a national program, sponsored by the National Consumers’ League which teaches teens to be smart and responsible consumers and citizens. The content and competition questions focus on five key areas of consumer knowledge that teens need to know to function effectively in today’s marketplace. These areas are: Personal Finance, Health and Safety, Environment, Technology and Consumer Rights and Responsibilities.

I’m very proud to say that our team won the state competition and will be advancing to the national contest in Pittsburgh, PA, April 21-24.

The team consists of five seniors who have worked toward qualifying for the national competition for four years. We are a small rural school and this is an amazing opportunity for these students to learn about another part of the country and meet other students.

This trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania will offer my students the opportunity to compete against the top LifeSmarts teams from all 50 states. Students will have leadership development opportunities as well as character development activities while at the competition.
Sightseeing will include the choice between a major league baseball game, the Carnegie Science Institute, or the Warhol Museum.

Students will compete in eight rounds of competition. Rounds include team events and individual events. One of the competitions involves completing a local food waste audit and making suggestions for improvement using the food recovery hierarchy.

Donations will be used to pay for our travel expenses:
Hotel $1662
Flights: $2659
Ground Transportation: $325

My students and I would be grateful for any donation amount.
