My Journey to Miss World Canada

“Great things never came from comfort zones.”

Reflecting on this past year, I feel that statement speaks truth. I feel that statement is a daily reminder that the magic truly happens once you find the strength, motivation, and courage to stick your neck out when the odds are against you.

For those of you who do not know me, I am Becky Molly! I would consider myself an average kid, on an extraordinary adventure. In the past year specifically, I have learned that regardless of what comes your way – good, bad, or ugly – life will continue to move forward. I’ve experienced some of the most exceptional moments of my life, and some of the most devastating and tragic moments as well. The unexpected death of my Dad last February resonated emotions within my heart and body that I will never shake, however, if I’ve learned anything it is that life can knock you down, but just don’t let it knock you out.

For that reason – among others, I am continuing to pursue my dream of an extraordinary life. One filled with opportunities to dream bigger, strive for greater, and aspire for the unimaginable.

Having said that, what if I told you I have been chosen as one of the 50 finalists of Miss World Canada, out of close to 4000 applicants? What if I told you that in approximately two short weeks I'll be travelling to Vancouver to participate in Pageant Week and on May 16th I'll be apart of the nationally televised Crowning Gala?

Okay, let's back up for a second. Remember that time, where I couldn't walk in heels without looking like a lumberjack? Or the fact that getting glamorous and being the centre of attention wasn't really my style? Or that stepping on stage at a regional fitness competition was terrifying, let alone a national stage full of media, pressure and a red carpet? For anyone that knows me well, their first reaction to this news was laughter, followed by a, "Oh my gosh Becky, how did you manage this?
I'm not your typical girlie girl - I wear runners more than I care to admit, I am a terribly clumsy young lady, I would eat with my hands everyday if I could, I think about cookie dough and oats every ten minutes, I have multiple flaws on my body, my hair can be a gong show 90% of the time, I hate doing laundry, I hardly wear make-up, and I'm lucky if I shampoo my hair twice a week.
But, then I think about these qualities and realize this is exactly why I want to contend for Miss World Canada. I am determined to show adolescents and young adults that in order to make your mark on the world - to make a difference, have a voice and contribute meaningfully - you must embrace and love yourself exactly for who you are. And that there isn't a set criteria to determine who can be a driving force within society - that is all up to YOU. I'm determined to remind the young audience that follows the Beauty Pageant Industry that beauty is not discovered by what people see in front of them - it's what you DO, it's how you carry yourself, it's what you commit your time and effort to, it's your passion, drive for change and willingness to stick your neck out when the odds are against you.
In order to step on that stage, there are many costs included (entry fee, clothing, accessories, transportation – all amounting to approximately $3500). Although I received the news that I was a finalist with only a few short weeks before the Crowning Gala, I am determined to overcome the financial obligations, wardrobe requirements, and accessory needs. I want to walk on that stage – not for me – but to show adolescents and young adults that an average girl, on an extraordinary adventure, is just the type of girl that is needed to inspire, motivate, and encourage others to believe in their abilities, persevere when life is difficult, and never settle for anything less than greatness.
