“Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities.”
- R. David Lankes, professor at Syracuse University

At Penn Middle School, our library is already a great place for students to do research, read a book, or collaborate on class projects with their peers – but it is in need of a serious update. Our goal is to renovate the existing space into a full library media center by improving student services and expanding our community presence.

By adding two 3D printers, a sign cutter, and the storage and supplies for this equipment, we will improve the library’s services by providing our students with expanded and daily access to STEM technology outside of the classroom. Doing so will allow them spend free time creating and innovating as they learn useful 21st century skills.

With the addition of new furniture, televisions, and a fresh coat of paint, we will make the library media center a welcoming community for all students. We also hope to improve our snack shop, which was created by our Life Skills department, and is already a popular setting for students to grab a snack while collaborating with their peers in the library. The snack shop provides the Life Skills students that work there with real-world experiences in a school setting, as well as an opportunity to interact with their peers.

Such an expansion will also support our students academically. According to Dr. Mary K. Biagini from the University of Pittsburgh, research shows that the presence of school libraries and components such as print and electronic resources, and updated technology, creates a positive effect on student scores on standardized reading and writing tests.

The benefits of this renovation are invaluable to the students of Penn Middle School, so we are reaching out to our friends, family, and neighbors to support this change and provide monetary donations. Please, consider helping us build our community and, on behalf of the staff and students of Penn Middle School, thank you for your time.
