Hello! My name is Karisa and I have recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare and very unknown genetic disorder of the brain and spinal cord called Sara's Syndrome. For years I have suffered greatly due to my progressively worse health and saw doctor after doctor trying to find answers. After sending my records to The Chiari Institute I was finally diagnosed with this disease which affects every aspect of life and all the body's systems.
My body does some pretty weird and crazy stuff. I often go completely paralyzed and can only walk short distances before my legs collapse beneath me. I have extremely violent seizure like episodes on a regular basis for hours at a time. I have constant headaches and chronic fatigue, that makes thinking nearly impossible. I have problems with my heart, blood flow, and even difficulties breathing at times. There are so many symptoms its simply not possible for me to list them all, but suffice to say that everyday is definitely interesting and scary at the same time.
It's all caused because my spine is not properly supporting my head and is like a spike in my brain stem causing severe neurological problems.A surgery has been proposed to have my head taken off my spine and put on properly and to fuse my neck with rods so it will have a stability and not put pressure on my brain stem any more.
This surgery will take place in April, and my mother and I will have to travel from Washington state to New York city to have it done. We have an incredibly high deductible, and trying to pay for it all upfront seems nearly impossible. My family would greatly appreciate any support that could be given to help us raise the cost for this surgery which amounts to $15,000 for the trip to New York and to meet my deductible.
