Kell 2 Kazakhstan
Donation protected
Hi my name is Kell and I am a 16 year old Melbourne based junior track and road cyclist; I'm also a proud member of St Kilda Cycling Club. As well as here, you can also follow my journey on the Facebook page Friends of Kell O'Brien .
After securing a Bronze Medal in the Individual Pursuit and also a Bronze in the Teams Pursuit at the recent Cycling Australia Track Nationals in Melbourne, I was one of 5 male endurance riders in a 15 member team selected to represent Australia at the UCI Junior Track World Championships being held in Astana, Kazakhstan August 19-23, 2015.
In order for me to travel and compete, we need to raise at least $8000 (including passport and all travelling expenses) Amongst all our fundraising efforts, most importantly will be donations made by people like you; family, friends, local businesses and the cycling community. Any amount helps me get further along to my target and I would be so grateful for your donation.
I've been been cycling since I was 5, first at Lilydale BMX Club, then a few years later moved into Mountain Bike racing with my Dad, John. In 2012, I joined a local road and track (velodrome) cycling club and discovered my love of road and track cycling.
I won the Junior Austral Wheelrace in March 2014 and was subsequently sponsored by O2 Racing who have been incredibly supportive in the development of my cycling; an amazing team! Thanks guys! I also have to say thanks to Bayswater Jayco for providing me with a new track bike so I can continue to compete. Without your help, I would not be going to Kazakhstan!
The past 12 months have seen me place in top 5 at State Championships in road cycling, win the Victorian Schools Cycling Championships, place 5th in the prestigious Austral Wheelrace at HiSense Arena in Dec 2014 and then recently my Bronze medals at Track Nationals in Jan 2015 which culminated in selection for World Championships this year.
in 2015, I have also won a silver medal at the Victorian Junior Criterium Champonship (U19) in Geelong and a gold medal in the VICS Criterium at the new Carribean Gardens circuit.
More recently, I competed at ITS (International Track Series) at the Adelaide Super-Drome. Our Junior Worlds Team combination secured the Gold Medal in the Team Pursuit which was some invaluable experience riding together in preparation for Kazakhstan in August. I also placed 2nd in the U19 Mens Points Race and 1st in the Elimination. It was great experience racing at that level.
On June 27th I won the Melbourne Omnium, these Omnium sessions at DISC have provided some great racing opportunities during the winter.
As it's been road season here in Melbourne, I have competed in several road events as my coach and I saw that they would benefit my training. The Preston Mountain Classic, the Hamilton 120 and Vic 100K Titles, all have provided some really good training in tough conditions.
July 10-12 I have travelled to the Gold Coast with the VIS to compete at the U19 Road National Championships. I secured a Silver Medal in the Criterium on day 2 in a photo finish. I do love Crit racing and it was great to get back into one as it's been a while since the end of the summer season.
There's lots of training and racing on thats for sure! We will continue to keep you up to date along the way.
My family and I thank you for your help in getting me to Junior Worlds and for following my journey.
note**If by the extreme generosity of others we happen to exceed our goal, the funds over and above what is needed for this trip will be invested in an interest bearing account for any future trips, equipment needs and support services which are related directly to the development of Kell's cycling career. We will always be transparent about how the funds are spent and will make posts with this information at those times.
