Kris Simmons is a hard working, academically, musically, and creatively successful student in Anchorage, Alaska. He is currently a junior at South Anchorage High School. For the past 5 years, he has had the opportunity to work (under the direction of teacher and mentor, Lee Butterfield) alongside other student filmmakers, musicians, technicians, and creatives to produce a daily school oriented news cast, local public media, live streaming events, as well as personal media projects such as the one which has driven the creation of this GoFundMe page.
As the creator of the video recognized with the "Rising Star" award, generously presented on behalf of SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design ), Kris has received the opportunity to participate in a Summer intensive at one of the three SCAD college locations, which will begin either July 18th or 25th 2017 (depending on which campus he chooses to attend). This challenging five-week program awards college credit to rising high school seniors who are ready for a university experience at SCAD Savannah, SCAD Atlanta, or SCAD Hong Kong. Students enroll in two college-level classes and have the opportunity to build or enhance their portfolios.

SCAD provides half of the tuition ($4,900.00), and Kris needs to make up the other half to include travel, and room and board. That's why we're coming to you. This isn't something he can do on his own. Time is of the essence, as he's just become aware of the opportunity today, May 5th at the close of the South High School Video Awards Film Festival, and the application deadline has already passed. SCAD is gracious to hold it open for the film makers in the South High Film Festival.
Not only does the recipient of this award need to create something, in this case a video, which is excellent in quality, content, and execution, they must also maintain a high GPA, be internally motivated, and demonstrate an ethic and ability worthy of this advanced opportunity. Kris checks all of those boxes, and more.
If our efforts on this page are successful, Kris will have just returned from a European tour in early June with
da Capo , an Alaska based audition only, elite performance choral group, which he's already invested in! This new opportunity was definitely unexpected, and not budgeted for.

All of this will continue an incredible few seasons which saw Kris selected for Alaska's All-State Choir three years running, lead roles in The Wizard of Oz (Scarecrow), Grease (Danny Zuko), and most recently West Side Story (Tony), repeated selection to State Solo and Ensemble Festival, several other lead and supporting acting roles in local theatre, and numerous live performances with his band, Brother Will . Kristofer has accomplished all of this, and more, while maintaining a (current) GPA of 3.87.
Kris's future plans include working to develop his acting and singing abilities, along with increased expertise in video editing and digital graphic design. This opportunity with SCAD couldn't be more perfectly suited to energize his efforts for the future.
