Aim

To raise £100 to pay for 2 new low level basketball hoops for the Lancashire Bombers Wheelchair Basketball Club.

The Club

Lancashire Bombers Wheelchair Basketball Club is a fully inclusive Wheelchair Sports Club based in Preston. Set up in March 2011 by Andy and Mark with just five members the club has developed to boast nearly 20 members who train every Monday night in Preston. The club is not just for wheelchair users, they have non-wheelchair users, such as myself. However, everyone plays in a chair to create a fair and level playing field. The clubs main aim is to increase awareness and participation in adaptive sports by creating a friendly and inclusive enviroment where everyone enjoys taking part, regardless of their physical or technical ability.

My Story

My name is Greg Dunnings and in 2009 whilst serving with the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards in Afghanistan I was involved in an explosion which took the life of my platoon sergeant, made a friend of mine an above knee double amputee and tore through my leg, shattering my knee and ripping my entire lower leg away down to the bone.

During my rehabilitation I was introduced to adaptive sports as a means to aid in my recovery and get me back into sport even with my limited abilities. Over the coming years with the help of adaptive sports I was able to achieve a full recovery which culminated in me representing the United Kingdom at Prince Harry's Invictus Games this September where I achieved a Gold and Silver in indoor rowing.

Since discovering adaptive sports 8 years ago, I have found a real passion for helping other people to access sport regardless of their ability level and 2 years ago I found the Lancashire Bombers where they epitomize this ethos.

However, dispite the success of the club, due to the lack of funding, the club have not been able to afford new hoops so that all members of the club have the chance to score a basket.

My Challenge

On Sunday 19th November 2017 I am going to take part in the 36th My Protein Preston 10 Mile Road Race. Weighing in at 20 stone and despising any form of running, this will be a real challenge for me. However, if 10 miles of pain can enable 20 amazing people to have playing kit to wear each week then every step will be worth it.

Any donations are gratefully appreciated and I will update everyone after the race and hopefully when I can present the club with their new kits.

Thank you.
