Long-Form Documentary on Mental Illness

Donation protected
Thank you for visiting my GoFundMe campaign. My name is Trevor Chamberlain and I am a filmmaker.

This fundraiser will serve as a way to raise seed money to start a documentary on the topic of mental illness. Of the works I’ve created in my career as a filmmaker, this is the first film project in my life where I believe I have been "called" to make. It isn't a matter of me choosing to make this documentary; it chose me. I am ready to commit to see this project through to completion.

In the past few years, the discourse surrounding "mental illness" has taken a dark turn. There seems to be a growing judgment in the court of public opinion that those who suffer from mental illnesses are unpredictable, dangerous, and a threat to society. I've seen this misinformed assumption cause fear and pain in those who suffer from mental illness and even those who simply go to see a therapist. This isn't right and I feel compelled to explore why this stereotype exists and to provoke thoughts and feelings through film in the hope of shifting perspectives.

It's time to examine the complex labyrinth of mental illness and emotional disorders. If this film ends by leaving audiences thinking, then I have done my job.

My ultimate goal is for the film to be long, possibly episodic. I also expect the production time to be lengthy. The project could take years to create. I do recognize the reality that money and resources may dictate the process, and the final product might end up only being a short film. I intend, however, to probe the issue as best as I can. I know it's impossible to leave no stone unturned, but I aim to turn over as many as possible.

I am here today asking for your help. I need somewhere to start.

Production resources, and research and travel expenses cost a lot of money. But your gift can offer me a push in the right direction. My intention is to build upon these initial funds: I can shoot and edit enough footage to then seek further funding from more well-known resources, like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, grants, and possible private investors.

Don't just think you will be helping me financially. You will also be a part of the moment when the discussion began. A discussion that could, quite possibly, change people's minds.

Any donation will help. No matter how large or how small. If you can't donate at this time, posting a link to the fundraiser on your Facebook page and tweeting it out to your followers would be a great means of support as well.

Thank you so much for your time.

Wish me luck!
