Mindfulness for NYC Youth

Donation protected
It all started a few years back....

I had been volunteering for close to a decade through various programs benefiting NYC youth.  To my friends I was going above and beyond but for me it wasn't enough.  I felt the need and the responsibility to be part of a movement. As I was searching the internet, I stumbled upon, Project Happiness.

Project Happiness is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people with the resources to create greater happiness within themselves and the world.  Their vision is all about using mindfulness and positive exercises to promote happiness and overall better quality of life.  Yes! I wanted to know more. I wanted to be a part of this Mindful movement.  After years of holding community circles, workshops and events, I joined the team of ambassadors around the globe and was named the Offical Regonial Ambassador of New York for Project Happiness.

Our Vision
Though we can’t always control what happens in life, it’s good to know we can control how we deal with it. We can find ways to create the best life possible.

We believe that every person can learn ways to become happier by developing awareness about the choices we all make in the face of day to day challenges. With some easy and fun training, our new choices can make life better. As we become more aware of who we are, master our emotions more effectively, recognize our strengths, and build our character, we cultivate compassion for ourselves and for others.

Project Happiness, specializes in emotional resilience-building programs that are used by people of any age and endorsed by public schools, private institutions and Universities around the U.S. and the world. Our purpose is to provide proven techniques to cultivate one’s own authentic happiness.

Drawn from research in neuroscience, mindfulness and positive psychology, Project Happiness’ strength-based approach teaches vital social and emotional skills. Using books, film and educational programs, we’re empowering children, families and communities to create happier, more meaningful lives.

Through our strength-based curriculum, Project Happiness is working to help create a world where:

School bullying will no longer be a socially accepted behavior
Young adults will be taught to know and value their passions and personal strengths, and become more compassionate to themselves and others
Building one’s character will be as important as building one’s resume

Do you know?

3.22 million kids, ages 7-17 were treated for depression in the past 5 years. This is more than double the number from the previous 5 years.
In American schools: 160,000 + children miss school every day, due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students.

In a survey of high school students, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center found that almost 1 in 5 teens had thought about suicide, about 1 in 6 teens had made plans for suicide, and more than 1 in 12 teens had attempted suicide in the last year.

Could you imagine incorporating a mindfulness program at a young age and how these numbers would change?

What is Mindfulness?
“Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through the practice of meditation and other training.”

Mindfulness with Students
"Studies find that youth benefit from learning mindfulness in terms of improved cognitive outcomes, social-emotional skills, and well being. In turn, such benefits may lead to long-term improvements in life. For example, social skills in kindergarten predict improved education, employment, crime, substance abuse and mental health outcomes in adulthood."

As I certified Meditation Teacher, I have come up with a program incorporating Project Happiness's cirriculum and other teachings to bring to Mindfulness and Positive Thinking to schools and community centers around New York City.

I have already been hired by a few schools to bring this program to light.  I need help raising funds to cover costs of books, materials and other expenses. Any amount would help.  Be a part of this #MINDFULMOVEMENT
