MOTHER’S MILK

More than a film, Mother’s Milk: A Film Quilt is an Immersive Experience and example of what good can be made out of negative circumstances when a community agrees to rise.

We are raising funds to finish the coloring and sound on the actual film. As well as making sure we have the space, time, and resources to develop the immersive experience.

Mother’s Milk: A Film Quilt is a response piece that speaks to our troubling times of oppression and injustice. Its aim is to help the world to understand why violence doesn’t work and why worthiness and self love does.

Adding to the international tradition of community folk art, this piece stands on the shoulders of great works like the AIDS Memorial Quilt and the murals that inspire the hope and endurance of a community in crisis. It is a radical reinvention of media that creatively addresses the social issues of today.

Mother’s Milk is a series of shorts, stitched together in a visual album to tell a black boy named Sparrow’s story of meeting his mother and finding his way home. But the magic doesn’t stop on screen: You, our audience, are also invited to step into the role of Sparrow, becoming “#iamsparrow”, in a living, immersive experience.

Imagine yourself walking into a meat locker of hoodies, taking one, putting it on and embarking on this great journey with on-screen Sparrow as he thirsts for his mother and true home.

This multi-platform, immersive piece is both new media and a live production. It is a living gallery of multiple projection screens, speakers and more. It’s a museum exhibit that comes to life, literally bringing the audience on our main character’s journey together.

This wild, non-linear story itself confronts themes and topics of abuse, bullying, depression, forgiveness, brotherhood, sisterhood, parenthood, self-respect, gun violence, police brutality, displacement of self, homelessness, racism, body image, consent, cat-calling, the power of knowing your history and more... head-on.

In the end, Mother’s Milk: A Film Quilt hopes to empower community members with tools to make their own film quilts, ultimately adding to a larger quilted conversation.
