WRSC Leadership Conference

My name is Christopher Tomlin, I am a teacher at WRHS, and am the advisor for the Student Council. For the past fourteen years we have served our school and the local community through both service and social events.  In addition to our spirit weeks and homecoming dance, we run a number of service events.  Our annual service events including our 8th annual Kards for Kids event where we had the entire student body making cards to be delivered to hospitalized children during the winter holidays.  We held our second annual Trick-or-Treat Street in the fall to provide a safe, warm place for children eleven and under to trick-or-treat. On Earth Day, we volunteered to help clean a local park, picking up garbage and putting down mulch.

Last year we were named National Gold Council of Excellence for the first time. This honor is awarded by the National Association of Student Council’s (NASC) to exemplary Student Councils that model leadership, contribute service, and support activities that improve school and community. 

The WRSC has been trying to make a positive difference through our actions. Last year we traveled to Florida to attend our first National Leadership Conference, due to expenses only six of our 50 members could attend.  The members that were able to attend enjoyed 3 days of conferences where they got the opportunity to share and learn from student leaders all over the United States, as well as delegations from Canada and China. This year’s leadership conference is going to be held in New Mexico and more of our students want to attend the conference however once again the expense is great.
