Nina Goes Volunteering in Ghana!

Donation protected
Hi lovely people!

So for those of you who don't know, I am heading back to Ghana this July for about a month/5 weeks, but this time it won't be all elephants and wrestling with crocodiles. While I'm there I'll be spending some time volunteering with this fantastic group called Voluntary Projects Overseas, who've just accepted me onto their team for 2 weeks as an English teacher.  I'll be based at a small school in Accra called Sraha AdMA Basic School, where the majority of children are from very underprivileged backgrounds. In fact most of the children are able to attend the school only because they have sponsors who are able to provid them with the uniforms and books they need.

Who are VPO?

VPO are a relatively new organisation who have only been around for the last 10 years. It started out in Bolivia but since then has expanded and now runs in 8 difference countries across the world, including India, Cambodia, and Ghana. It is a non-profit organisation, and any money they have that isn't spent on maintainnig the business is paid back into the local projects they run in communities. Their mission statement as well as more information can be found here; http://voluntaryprojectsoverseas.org/all-about-us/

Why have I decided to do this?

On my first trip to Ghana over the New Year I found the experience to be a real eye-opener for me. When I made comparisons between how people live there, and my life in the UK, I came away feeling extremely humbled and grateful for the things I have that are always taken for granted. While I was there I decided I wanted to spend time during my next trip doing something that would make a difference to those I met. After 2 months of searching for a suitable placement, VPO came along and offered me an amazing opportunity to spend 2 weeks with their team in Accra as a teacher.

As I'll be finishing university within the next year, I'm also now at the stage where I have to start thinking about the career I would like to go into, and working with NGO's and charities overseas is definitely something I am looking to do long term. VPO offer a series of internships as well as volunteering opportunities, therefore this will hopefully be the first step I take to my future career!

Where do we come into this?

To take part in this amazing opportunity I need to raise at least £450 before I go. The majority of this money goes towards funding the school I'll be working with, as well as supporting the local families whose children attend! Any money this organisation makes is always put back into the communities and projects they work with, meaning that if you decide to donate you won't just be helping me, you'll be helping these families as well!

Any help you're able to give me financially would be hugely appreciative, as  being a student I would not be able to fund this all by myself. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and I hope you'll consider donating to my trip!
