"My life. My Choices" - Was created by the Not-In-Stone Project and is an evidence-based intervention for reducing teen drug & alcohol experimentation and subsequent addiction.
Why is the intervention important? Studies have shown that nearly half of teens between 11 - 14 years of age, who participated in interventions that supported four protective factors (self-regulation, social competence, parental involvement, and school bonding and achievement) did not become addicted to drugs or alcohol in high school or later in life. The problem is, no single intervention exists that incorporates all four of these factors...until now, that is.
So, how does the "My life. My choices" help teens to not become addicts? First, it never tells them what to do or not do. Instead, it arms them with factual, real-world information that can be drawn upon when deciding whether to give in to peer pressure to "join in." Research has repeatedly demonstrated that substance use among adolescents is directly associated with deficits in behavior regulation, detachment to their school environment, poor academic performance, social incompetence, and a lack of parental participation in their education and lives. To address these issues, “My life. My choices” has been based on proven, evidence-based techniques and data that draw from and support the four protective factors.
“My Life. My Choices” will provide adolescents between the ages of 11–14 straightforward and honest information about drugs, alcohol, and addiction. This is important because adolescence is a time where a significant biological, social, cultural, and psychological changes occur. We now know that early drug use can set the stage for addiction and anti-social behavior. However, if we can reach kids before they enter high school, the odds of them becoming addicts are cut nearly in half!
The Not-In-Stone Project is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of teen drug and alcohol addiction through education, counseling, and evidence-based interventions.
Donations are tax deductible and will be used to help us offset printing costs of our educational literature
as well as help us purchase portable audio/visual (AV) equipment and a few tanks of gas as we travel throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Having our own AV equipment will give us the ability to reach at-risk teens in their churches, community centers and schools.
No kid's future should be carved in stone. With your help, it won't be.
