It was a typical day in the life of young Addison Peters, a beautiful two-year old little girl with a huge smile that lit up any room she was in. Addison felt a little "off" that day, and complained to her Mom that she wasn’t feeling well. At first, her mother Trudy assumed she was just getting a cold from the other children at her daycare. On January 28th, 2009, when Trudy tried to wake Addison to start their day, she was found unresponsive. She was rushed to the Timmins and District Hospital and after a quick examination, flown to Sick Kids Hospital. She was diagnosed with encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and was in a coma. Addison remained in a coma for over a week, and then miraculously returned to us. After over a year of grueling rehabilitation at the Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Centre and much emotional and financial hardship, Addison was able to regain almost 90% of her physical abilities, 60% of her vision, and almost 90% of her mental capacity. Addison was given a second chance at life.
Trudy thought her nightmare was over.
Unfortunately, on February 23rd, 2015, Addison contracted a flu, and the next morning she woke with paralysis on the right side and could not speak. An ambulance brought her to the Timmins and District Hospital where a MRI indicated that there were new lesions and new swelling in her brain. Her condition quickly worsened. She was flown to Sick Kids Hospital, fell into a coma and had to be intubated. The nightmare had returned with vengeance. She was again diagnosed with encephalitis (swelling of the brain) with new lesions on her brain. The doctors did not expect Addison to live through the night. By the grace of God, she is still with us. Some of her specialists believe that Addison’s condition may be caused by a metabolic disease and have sent her sample for genetic testing in Germany. A glimmer of hope occurred on March 4th, when the doctors were able to remove her from the respirator. Hours later, Addison was too weak to maintain her stats, and they had to reinsert it. There has been no improvement in her condition since then.
Trudy Peters is an incredibly devoted, caring, and loving mother who has endured more than most of us could ever imagine. Trudy is one of the strongest women we know, but unfortunately love, faith, and strength cannot help to support her financially through this ordeal. Trudy has had to leave her job, and move from her hometown of Timmins, to Toronto. This financial strain has put a huge additional stress on Trudy. Trudy needs our help. We thank you for your prayers, your cards, gifts, and the support Trudy has received from her friends, family, co-workers, and community. It has been much appreciated. We all want to ensure that Addison receives the very best care, and that her Mother is able to continue to be there by her side through the long journey ahead. As you know, this comes with a substantial expense that is not covered by OHIP. Please help us to support Trudy and her daughter through this time. Every single dollar goes towards Addison and Trudy’s comfort. Thank you.
