Let's start a compost program in Ocean City MD!

Tax deductible
Your donation will allow us to take a crucial first step in creating a full time compost program that we plan to expand every year. A gift of any amount would mean the world to us and be the start of something bigger than ourselves! Note: We are a 501(c)3 ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

About:
We are expanding our City-Wide Compost Program.  In 2018, we ran phase one of our program, a pilot program removing 2000 lbs of food waste . In 2019, we want to launch the final phase of our pilot compost program. This will allow us to collect additional data to present the city for additional financing.

We need money for:
Driver & Transportation
Equipment & Materials
Consultants
Permitting
*currently all expenses are out of pocket because no private pickup services exist in the Ocean City. Because of this, there is no mechanism for us to take in revenue for any kind of waste removal.

We are consulted by:
The Institute of Local Self-Reliance (Brenda Platt)
Coker Consulting (Craig Coker)
Veterans Compost

Our Partners:
Sunbelt Rentals
Energy Justice Network

ILSR.org

The program is operated by Garvey Heiderman, owner of The Hobbit Restaurant in Ocean City.  "It was important for me that an Ocean City business owner take control of the program in order to guarantee its success" said Josh Chamberlain, Founder of Go Green OC.

Impact:

Normally, organic waste is sent to Pennsylvania to be burned in an incinerator.   By moving organic food waste into the local economy we will reduce pollution in PA and also reduce emissions by not hauling waste out of state.  (more below)

Who We Are:
Go Green OC , Inc is a Maryland 501(c) environmental organization.  Our focus is on the eastern shore of Maryland, in particular - Ocean City, MD.

Go Green OC  is a grassroots organization dedicated to promoting the goals of zero waste by education, program implementation, and cross-community collaboration . Specifically in the areas of recycling, composting, and zero-waste.

BENEFITS OF COMPOSTING:

In the community...

• On a per-ton basis, making compost alone, employs 2x more workers than landfills and 4x more than incinerators (per 10,000 tons waste/year). Jobs!
• Saves the city money which can be hopefully be put back into recycling programs (especially cardboard!)
• Moves money away from a polluting waste incinerator and into the local economy
• Introduction of Youth Programs and education
• If expanded to multiple cities, composting can slow down the expiration of surrounding landfills
• When businesses compost, they create a more positive environmental image which attracts new visitors and increases tourism

In the environment...

• When added to soil, compost can filter out urban stormwater pollutants be 60-95% therefore improving the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
• Green infrastructure uses compost in rain gardens, green roofs, bioswales, vegetated retaining walls and  on steep highway embankments to control soil erosion and stormwater. Using compost in green infrastructure creates even more jobs.
• The MD State Highway Administration is now required  to use compost  to mitigate pollution runoff
• Food scraps in landfills generate methane, a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 84x more potent than CO2 in the short term but when converted into compost and applied to the land, compost sequesters carbon.  One research project found that ½ inch of compost applied to rangeland sequestered the equivalent of 1 metric ton of C02e/hectare over three years.
• Compost improves biological, chemical and physical characteristics of soil
• Protects against soil desertification and soil erosion
• Enhances plant disease suppression
• Increases resilience to floods and droughts
• Reduces needs for chemicals
• Increases microbial activity
• You can compost cardboard, shredded paper, lint/hair and more just to name a few
• 70% of residential trash is compostable
