Volunteering in Africa

Hi all! My name is Liv Romano and to get right to it, two of my biggest passions in life consist of elephants and helping people. I am currently a Junior at Towson University studying Health Science with a Community Health Concentration (basically Public Health). It didn't take long for me to realize that I was strongly drawn to the field of preventative medicine and health promotion and education. One of the topics that I am most interested and passionate about is helping those affected by communicable diseases, especially HIV/AIDs. With a life long love of elephants and helping people, I decided volunteering in Africa was basically my life calling. I'm sure many of you are aware of the danger imposed on elephants, African and Asian, by poachers for their tusks. Poachers have almost all but eliminated elephants in many parts of Africa, leaving the overall population labeled as endangered. HIV/AIDs  on the other hand remains one of  the highest causes of death in many African countries, if not the number one cause. After much internet digging, I found an amazing organization named African Impact, that had programs in both of the fields I was looking for. This past January, I went to Zimbabwe for 2 weeks to work with endangered black rhinos and African elephants on the Imire Ranch. This was an absolutely amazing, life-changing experience that was also a dream come true. I am currently in the process of documenting my experience there working with the animals, particularly the elephants, in a blog for The Elephant Pants Co. I'll be posting links to my blogs soon so stay tuned! In the mean time, be sure to follow them on social media and spot some of my pictures from my trip on there!
In August, I'll be heading to South Africa for 3 weeks to work at a medical clinic in the very rural setting of Zululand. There, I will be participating in African Impact's HIV/AIDs program where I will be assisting in the creation of education and awareness classes for the disease, helping nurses with patients, doing at-home patient visits, and so much more. All I want out of these trips is to make the most positive impact possible for the animals and people that need it the most. Unfortunately, there have been many unforeseen financial obstacles that my family and I have had to endure. Being a college student, I am trying my hardest to balance school, working part-time, and what little remains of a personal life. Absolutely any and everything would be greatly appreciated, not only by me and my family, but by the children in these rural African communities (and of course the animals!). A portion of the money I hope to raise will go towards buying supplies (medical gloves, multi-vitamins, nutri-shakes, diapers, etc.) that I can bring overseas with me to donate to the communities that I will be working with. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about my cause and I hope I can inspire you to take action in helping others in need.
