Plate Beacon encourages the restaurant industry to fight local hunger by helping them donate their perishable resources to food insecure populations and food desert communities.
GFM Goal: For now, we are only asking enough to pay for administrative startup fees so that Plate Beacon can gain 501c3 status sooner and be eligible to apply for federal grants. After admin costs, funds will go towards running the website, and networking cards for team members, the very people helping me realize this vision. 2016: In a class called Marketing for Non-Profit Organizations, an ambitious idea was conceived for my class project. It was only meant to be a new program initiative that can be pitched to an existing non-profit organization.
Summer of 2018: My vision surpassed just a program initiative with a marketing campaign. Instead, Plate Beacon was born. Plate Beacon is a nonprofit organization that engages the restaurant industry to fight local hunger by providing them with an app and service that takes care of the logistics of donating food surplus to charity.
Fall 2018: Thanks to the support and guidance of professors at Northeastern Illinois University and my nonstop ways of networking, we are now in the app development stage with a handful of NEIU Computer Science students looking to gain more coding experience by helping develop the Plate Beacon App. (If you or anyone you know is an experienced app developer who has a heart of gold and would like to jump onboard and help us with coding, please let me know.)
