Pokie’s Lifesaving Surgery

This is the face of a kitten who needs our help. Meet Pokie. Pokie came to me with two other kittens from Delaware, both of his friends had to have enucleations performed because their eyes were ruptured. With your help we were able to afford their surgeries and get them the care they needed. We considered Pokie the healthy one, the lucky one, but now we realize he is in need of our help more than ever. We started to notice some odd, almost neurologic behavior from him. At first it was subtle, a fall here and there, nothing too noticeable. He went under anesthesia Monday for his neuter and his problems became more apparent post surgery. He started becoming wobbly and unstable an hour or so after eating, drooling, falling over, and having what we believe are seizures. We highly suspect Pokie has a liver shunt and is in desperate need of treatment. This is an expensive condition, BUT if we raise the funds to treat him he still has the chance to live a completely normal long life, this diagnosis is NOT necessarily a death sentence. I’ve been researching and joined a group for people with pets with liver shunts. There are many healthy, happy pets who have survived and done great, but all of their owners will tell you the diagnosis and surgery came at a price. I am faced with the decision of raising the money to get this guy his literal life saving surgery or letting him go, and I personally am struggling with that. He is only 12 weeks old, he LOVES to love you. He is extremely friendly, playful, happy. He deserves a chance to live. He acts like a normal happy kitten 75% of the time. The initial diagnosis requires bloodwork and testing of the bile acids which we have already had done. The results are consistent with a liver issue. Animals with liver shunts cannot process food and anesthesia like a normal animal would, hence his symptoms only being present after eating and the increase in symptoms post surgery. He is on a special diet and medication while awaiting our decision and he has already improved dramatically. We have requested Pokie be added to the waiting list for a cat scan and then potential surgery at Virginia Tech Veterinary teaching college, but we can only go through with this if we raise the funds. This is a specialist surgery and will definitely cost us, they quoted us between $2500-$3500 for the cat scan and surgery, plus we will have to transport him to and from Blacksburg Virginia from the Baltimore area. So here I am asking you for help, for Pokie. This is literally me begging you to help me save his life.
