Roselle's Medical Recovery Fund

Hello friends, family members, and anyone else reading this!

We want to introduce you to an amazing sister, daughter, and friend. Roselle graduated from the University of Florida in 2014 and began working for the Gainesville office of the American Red Cross through AmeriCorps. She has been a key member of the Northeast Florida Chapter of the American Red Cross, going on countless trips into the community for disaster relief. Recently, she went on a two week deployment to Louisiana in order to help with the flood relief efforts. She has been accepted to start a Masters in Medical Science program at the University of Florida this fall and has an extremely bright future ahead of her.

As a friend, she is always available for support and willing to listen. She is constantly smiling, always happy, and never holds a grudge. We all feel blessed to have her around as she is such a positive spirit in our lives. As a daughter, she has always put family first and always finds time to drive home and help her parents. As a sister, she is a role model to her 3 younger sisters because of her intelligence, hardwork, humility, and dedication to her Catholic faith. She has also been a dedicated sister of the UF associate chapter of aKDPhi since 2010, empowering others to pursue their passions and to never give up on their dreams.

Unfortunately, bad things sometimes happen to people who don't deserve it. Roselle has been in the ICU since 7/21 and has been extremely sick. She suffered from a fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting before she developed altered mental status, intractable seizures, cerebral edema with herniation, and digital ischemia. We have heard many physicians say along the way that they have never seen anything like this and have never seen things progress so rapidly. On Sunday 7/26, we were told that the cerebral edema was severe and that we should make preparations. It was the worst moment of our lives as we could not comprehend how we could lose someone who was so young and who deserves nothing but the best. Miraculously, she has improved and is stable but still critically ill. We are still praying everyday and in good spirits because there is a route to recovery that is possible and we will continue to work hard to give her that opportunity.

She has been in a pentobarbital-induced coma for most of her hospitalization and received a long list of medications including many antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, and high-dose steroids. She has also received several transfusions, plasma exchange therapy, 2 brain MRIs, 2 CT head angiographies, 2 CT head, 1 CT extremity angiography, 1 CT abdomen/pelvis, and many other medical treatments along the way. We still do not know with high confidence what caused all of these symptoms but we have high hopes that she will continue to recover slowly.

This will be a long journey to recovery with many speedbumps along the way but we truly believe we can do it. Her family has endured a lot throughout all of this and will need all of the support that they can get.

This fund is to help relieve some of the total medical costs that will come with an extended ICU hospitalization. We appreciate support in all forms, and many friends and family members have stopped by the hospital almost every hour of every day and we are extremely grateful for the amazing people that are in our lives.

Please let us know if you have any questions about her current status or have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your time and please contact us with any questions!

But most of all, please pray for our beloved friend, sister, and daughter, Roselle Derequito.

We LOVE YOU Roselle!!
