Clean Water: Puerto Rico Life Straw
ATTENTION: We have received the $1200 + 202 more. We are excited to move forward with this campaign. Much thanks to you. We will move forward with purchasing the Life Straws. We will keep everyone updated.
THE PROBLEM:
During September, Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Irma, but mainly Hurricane Maria. As we know, the damage to the island was detrimental to the citizens of Puerto Rico and the landscape.
Regular and clean water has become scarce. As such, many of the Puerto Rico residents have no choice but to drink from streams and rivers, now contaminated.
THE CAUSE:
The cause of the water contamination is due to animal waste and other forms of harmful bacteria as a result of extreme flooding and rainfall. With contaminated rivers and streams, many of the residents have contracted Leptospirosis. Symptoms of Leptospirosis include kidney or liver failure.
THE SOLUTION:
My solution is to raise funds to purchase Life Straws , a personal filtration device that will allows:
1. Filtration of approximately 1000 liters of water
2. Removes approximately 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria
GOAL:
My goal is to raise enough funds to purchase 65 Life Straws. Life Straws cost on average $18 a piece, which could ultimately be given to 65 or more families. 65 Life Straws will cost approximately $1200. If we surpass our goal, we would like to use the excess funds to purchase other much-needed items (ie, Mosquito repellant).
My team of friends and I will hand-deliver these Life Straws (with other donated items), and educate the individuals on how to use them and the importance of it with hopes we can lessen the outbreak of Leptospirosis and other bacterial diseases.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Donations of every amount is greatly appreciated and helps us reach our personal goal in providing a water filtration system.
