Imagine your dog roaming hungry out on the streets for days half limping as it was probably hit by a motorcycle, feeding on street garbage, getting frightened when children hurl stones at him for fun or just to drive him away, getting abused and kicked repeatedly by people in the neighborhood.

This is a daily scene in Kathmandu, Nepal. The level of abuse that the animals face is inhumane.

My Story: I am Angeela, a communications graduate student. I’m passionate about helping these homeless and helpless animals. After watching a shocking video of a street dog being brutally killed by Nepal Police in view of the public, I made up my mind to work toward ending this suffering.

PROBLEM: More than 25,000 street dogs wander the city of Kathmandu, Nepal often starving, injured, and ill-treated (Source: Street Dog Care). The community is uninformed and uneducated about animal health and behavior, some are fearful to even approach these dogs. Children often hurl stones at and torment the stray dogs.

A SOLUTION: Humane Education in Nepal’s schools will help to end this animal abuse and neglect. Humane education will teach kindness, compassion and empathy toward street dogs – and all companion animals. It will raise the community’s caring and kindness toward these street dogs.

MY PLAN:  This May 2015, I am heading home to Kathmandu, Nepal to start up a humane education program for school children. Our volunteer team hopes to work with schools to educate the kids about street dogs and pet ownership. Our activities will focus on safety – for animals and humans – as well as caring connections to be made with street dogs.

Weekly feeding and health camps will also be organized to raise awareness in the community and to provide care to injured street dogs. Healthcare would include both food and treatment for any infections or wounds.

The long-term goal of Project Humane Nepal is to infuse humane education in the standard curriculum of the schools of Nepal and promote awareness about kind treatment of street dogs.

YOUR HELP:  Your contribution will help thousands of street dogs in Nepal. Funds will be used for educational materials and volunteer support as well as camp supplies like medicines, veterinary care, and dog food.

MY HONOR:  The Clinton Global Initiative University has honored me with acknowledging this humane education and care project as a 'commitment to action’ at their 2015 annual conference.  Over 1000 university students from around the world, including four students and myself from University of Nebraska at Omaha, gathered in Florida to share our passions and learn how to make our plans a reality.

If you are donating, do send us a photo of you and your dog and how having him around makes you feel happier. We would love to share YOUR story on our FB page and get inspired.

I hope you will contribute towards a better life for these innocent beings, spread the word to raise our voices together for street dogs or reach out to me if would like to help.

For it is the steps we take together, not the distance we cover or the destination we reach, that makes the world better. –Anonymous
