My name is Anthony Parker, and I am a senior at Michigan State University. I am a Marketing major and plan to go into Real Estate.
Combining my college education, campus organization involvement, work and professional skills, and soon study abroad experience I plan to create a strategy that will be beneficial to my community. I want to develop a system where people can do their regular daily activities that will ultimately contribute back to their surrounding communities. When a family goes out to buy groceries, get a car wash, or even have a night of pizza and bowling, the funds will be dedicated to a struggling business or redeveloping activity centers within the environment. Keeping these finances and resources inside the community will consequently improve the area. My first approach to this well-needed goal is real estate. As an African-American minority growing up in Detroit, Michigan, I would see more abandoned houses and buildings than ones that were still functional. These places used to be candy shops, skating rinks, malls, and shopping plazas. What I would love to do is restore these areas to give the next generation a piece of hope for their own city.
Studying abroad in China for Marketing, my major, will impact my goals and interests most in multiple ways. One way is seeing how another culture operates in their actual home land. Gaining the experience of exploring another country is similar to going to a friend’s house after school. The interaction you have with a person in school would be very different from seeing how they react in their own home; therefore, networking with China’s culture will provide the most accurate description of them. I’ve always been interested and sensitive to learning about diverse cultures, but being able to empathize and experience the real-time flow of an unfamiliar area is more rewarding. Another attribute is learning how the companies and businesses operate in this foreign country. China is known for having a strong economy, so seeing how this strategy works well for them can be applied to my business strategy. Gaining authentic experience on how connected China is will create a template I can follow for my community enrichment plans. Also, I want to start my career path with an internship or first level position with a company that will equip me with skills and resources to start my business as well. Since I am graduating soon and emerging into the workplace, I want to collect the social, professional, and cultural skills that will be useful throughout my career and life. I have been accepted to the Study Abroad program and am leaving May 6. I would be very gracious of all financial support to help make this trip possible!
