Why the Quba Zakat Fund?
Zakat is not optional. It is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth above the nisāb is required to give 2.5% of that wealth as Zakat — a sacred obligation owed to Allah ﷻ and a right of those He has designated as its recipients.
Since 2016, Quba Institute of New York has been dedicated to serving the Muslim community through education, religious guidance, and community development. In response to growing needs, we are establishing the Quba Zakat Fund and expanding our community projects.
Who Is Eligible to Receive Zakat?
Allah ﷻ states:
“Sadaqah (Zakat) is for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect it and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing slaves and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [needy] traveler – an obligation from Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” (Qur’an 9:60)
The Qur’an identifies eight categories of Zakat recipients:
1. Al-Fuqara’ — The poor
2. Al-Masakin — The needy
3. Al-‘Amilina ‘Alayha — Administrators of Zakat
4. Al-Mu’allafah Qulubuhum — Reconciliation of hearts
5. Fir-Riqab — Those in bondage
6. Al-Gharimin — Those in debt
7. Fī Sabīlillah — In the cause of Allah
8. Ibn al-Sabil — The traveler
The Quba Zakat Fund is distributed only within the following categories:
Al-Fuqara’ (The Poor)
Individuals who do not possess wealth equal to the nisāb.
Al-Masakin (The Needy)
Individuals who possess little or no wealth.
Al-Gharimin (Those in Debt)
Individuals whose debts exceed their zakatable and surplus assets.
May Allah ﷻ accept from you, purify your wealth, and place barakah in your giving.
