School Supplies 4 Detroit Students
Donation protected
Every student should have school supplies.
Growing up in an urban community like Detroit can bring forth many obstacles. We believe that not having the proper tools needed to succeed should never be one of them. In 2009 I helped start the Quest for a Cure initiative with Joanna Cooper. Our first event helped raise awareness and gain financial support for Benjamin Martin, an awesome kid whom at the time, was fighting cancer. (See video here ) Our mission was and still is to Heal Illness and Poverty, by Helping Other People. If you didn’t catch it, our mission is an acronym for Hip Hop which was a safe haven and early love for me while growing up in the heart of Detroit. Providing every student with the basic tools and materials needed is an essential part of their scholastic growth and achievement.
In 2014 Cass Tech (#32) and Renaissance High (#41) were the only Detroit schools to rank within the top 400 best schools for LOW INCOME students in Michigan by Newsweek. (Sept 16, 2014 www.mlive.com ) It hurts to even imagine how Detroit schools rank against schools across the board.
I remember my mother stepping in to help ease the load of back to school expenses by purchasing backpacks, pens, uniforms and pencils for my kids every August. She helped relieve a little pressure on my end, while making sure her grandchildren had a fighting chance inside of a school system that already needs a lot of improvement.
I was going to spend a few hundred dollars on some essential supplies like pens, pencils, paper and notebooks to give to a teacher for distribution as they see fit, but then I thought about you. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet people that are crazy enough to think that they can make a difference. People that are smart enough to know that a laundry list of school supplies isn’t going to solve the problem within our Detroit schools, but will still help because they know that its a start.
Regardless of what you do today, I’m going to go ahead and purchase whatever I can to help a handful of kids. If in that handful is the child that grows to be the adult that changes the world, great. If not, we can only hope that he or she remembers that extra push they recieved and pays it forward when they have a chance. In the meantime, I’m asking for you to take a second and click the donation button to give whatever you can. If that amount is $1 or a million, just know that it's going to a great cause.
We will use 100% of the money raised during this campaign to purchase and give teachers in Detroit supplies to distribute to students. Following this drive's success, look forward to fundraising events and workshops in the future.
If you can’t give anything of monetary value, reach out to give your time to a kid that needs it.
Thanks for taking the time to read our message. You've already made a difference!
