Tune Into the Fight

The story:

I am writing this on behalf of a local community figure, John Wells, regarding a proposed project to aid Alzheimer's patients and their families. Mr. Wells is heavily involved in the Big Bear Masons, and delves into response to a variety of needs.

Mr. Wells' mother-in-law is dealing with Alzheimer's Disease. After watching a film entitled "Alive Inside" by director Michael Rossato-Bennett, which was given the Audience Award in 2014 by the Sundance Film Festival, Mr. Wells was inspired.

"Alive Inside" depicts a series of patients who somehow were reawakened through listening to music, specifically music from their youth. Mr. Wells tried this tactic with his mother-in-law, who was otherwise on Hospice and expected to pass last year. Now, Mr. Wells' mother-in-law is thriving against the odds, and she herself has reawakened, can recognize family members and is no longer on hospice.

While there is little documentation about this possible treatment, nor do many doctors agree with its success, Mr. Wells is now determined to attempt to aid those ailed by Alzheimer's through music. His goal is to provide these patients with a mere $100 iPod with music that would be unique from patient to patient, which seems so small a cost to prolong the awareness of one suffering from the disease.

Musical therapy may not be a definitive answer, but what is the true worth of helping Alzheimer's patients and their families connect for as long as possible before the disease takes over? If music can help this connection, should it not be worth the effort? Life, in physical, mental and emotional terms, is worth every effort.

What we're asking for:

- Donations of new or used iPods or other MP3 players. These must be in functioning condition.
- Donations of NEW, compatible headphones (ear buds are not recommended for many elderly patients due to hearing aids, etc.)
- Monetary donations to help attain this goal.

Look at it this way, $10,000 purchases iPods for approximately 1,000 patients. That means approximately 1,000 families have a chance enjoy their loved ones, even just a little bit longer.

Material donations can be mailed to the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 4607, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315.
