Radcliffe Infirmary Commemorative Commission (RICC

The former Radcliffe Infirmary in Woodstock Road, closed as a hospital in 2007. Having served the Oxford district for more than 230 years.

The great work carried out by countless doctors, nurses and other hospital staff has never been properly recognised.
Those who trained inside its walls have gone out to practise throughout the British Isles and overseas, sharing their knowledge and skills the world over.

A group of nurses who trained at the hospital are raising money to commission a permanent art work "to honour the doctors, nurses and all who cared for the sick in the Radcliffe Infirmary 1770 - 2007".

Permission has been granted by Oxford University to create a modern, hand crafted artwork to celebrate the achievements of those who owe their careers to this august institution.
The award winning Oxfordshire artist, Alec Peever has designed a duel aspect, permanent artistic monument, to be hand carved from Portland limestone and Welsh slate to mark the site in perpetuity and draw the attention of future generations to the importance of this great Oxford landmark. Alec and his wife Fiona are responsible for a wide range of artistic works around Oxford and examples of their work can be seen on their website.

The art work comprises two aspects: the historical acknowledgement of the important role the building has played in the medical life of Oxfordshire and the wider world, represented by  hands carved into an oval plaque which has now been mounted on the external wall of the main hospital building.
The second aspect is a carved interpretation of a poem called, "These are the Hands" specially written by the poet Michael Rosen to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the NHS, which touchingly represents the human contribution from which we all benefit when we are sick and in need of help. The poem will be hand carved into a free standing stone shaft. We have Michael Rosen's permission to use the poem.

The two pieces each carved from the same stone are to be linked visually by placing them opposite each other.

PLEASE DONATE TO HELP US PAY FOR THIS LANDMARK PROJECT

Your donation will go towards the making of the artwork, the materials and installation costs. With your generosity, you will be directly contributing to the recognition of the history of the ancient City of Oxford.  The funds raised will all go towards the cost of stone column which will be £24,000.00

We have raised money from members of the Radcliffe Guild of Nurses but we now need to appeal to the wider public to bring the project to fruition. It would mean a great deal to us and the nurses who have supported us so far, to be able to complete the project and provide a lasting memorial and commemoration which can be seen by the public in the quod at the front of the old and much loved hospital.
