Razorbacks Read

Did you know that 3rd grade reading scores are used to predict future incarceration rates? Did you know that in low-income neighborhoods, there is only 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children? 14% of the population in Arkansas is illiterate and our children are lagging behind in grade-level reading scores. With your help, Razorbacks Read can help move the needle on childhood literacy.

One of the largest determining factors of childhood literacy is the number of age-appropriate books a child has access to in their home. With that in mind, the Volunteer Action Center at the University of Arkansas is hosting a nation-wide book drive called Razorbacks Read from now until October 24th to supply every K-3rd grade child in 6 schools around the state of Arkansas with a personal home library of 10 books. The book drive will benefit 6 schools in Arkansas: Dermott Elementary in Dermott, William Jefferson Clinton Primary in Hope, Carroll Smith Elementary in Osceola, Chicot Elementary in North Little Rock, Parson Hills Elementary in Springdale, and Westwood Elementary in Springdale, as well as Fayetteville Head Start. The VAC is choosing to focus on K-3rd grade students because that is the most crucial time period in a student’s reading development. Razorbacks Read hopes to collect 25,000 books for approximately 2,300 students around the state.

The Volunteer Action Center, Razorback Athletics, and JB Hunt will also host a Scholastic Book Fair on Wednesday, October 21st- Friday, October 23rd from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. As part of its Scholastic Dollars program, Scholastic Book Fairs will double the monies earned at the fair, which will be used to purchase more books and educational resources for young readers.
During the Book Fair, guests can also donate loose change through the Scholastic Book Fairs All for Books program to help purchase even more books for area students. Scholastic Book Fairs matches these monetary donations with a donation of up to one million dollars in books from The Scholastic Possible Fund, which distributes books to children in need through organizations such as the Kids In Need Foundation, Kids in Distressed Situations, and Sam’s Hope.
