Relevance Rising Guatemala 2016

"Humankind will not recover from its mistakes without global education." - Rigoberta Menchu, Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Guatemalan Activist.
The Relevance Rising seminar class of Maggie L. Walker's Governor's School is seeking funds to finish our 7 year project of building a community center and library in Tzununa, Guatemala. Together with the local community, we have moved rocks, tilled the land, built walls and now we are just lacking funds to finish the roof.
We are so excited to help create a place kids can come and read, write, learn, daydream, have fun, most importantly, forget their worries and just be kids again. Although a library may not seem like much, it gives a child a second chance at the priceless gift of literacy, an education. Without the funds to go to school, most kids finish their education at the sixth grade due to the fact they must enter the workforce to support and help sustain their families.
This library and community center will create the perfect opportunity for extended learning and provide a support system to continue into secondary education. Our goal is to empower this community through the power of education and improve their quality of life away from a life of alcohol abuse, crime, gangs, drugs, sexual assaults, and feelings of isolation and hopelessness. Thank you for your generous contribution. It is truly appreciated.
