Joseph P Houston Memorial Scholarship fund

My father, Joseph P. Houston Jr. passed away on April 20, 2019. I am reaching out for your assistance today in order to help honor one of my father's last requests. We would like to establish a Joseph P. Houston Jr. Memorial Scholarship.

As a family, we are setting up a $500 scholarship this year. It is our hope that we can raise enough funds to be able to offer a Joseph P. Houston Jr. Memorial Scholarship every year as my father devoted his life to education and helping others.

As a family we will be working in conjunction with the faculty and administration at Jefferson High School every step of the way from the application process to the selection of the scholarship recipients. We will be entrusting the management of these funds to the Jefferson Community Foundation.

About 20 years ago my father wrote a letter to all of us that wasn't to be read until after he died. In that letter he asked that we "establish some type of award or scholarship in Waterloo or Jefferson for a student who does service for others and has family need." In that same letter he said, "I wish I had been a millionaire. It would have been so enjoyable to share it with those in need."

A month before he died he made me promise to let his past students, faculty and staff know just how much they all meant to him. He also wrote something similar in that letter: "Not sure how long I'll be around, I just had a few thoughts to share, the first has to do with current and past teachers, students and administrators. I hope you got something from our times together. I certainly did, especially kids and those who found it possible to feel close to me. You were ALL important in my eyes. Thank you for the many good memories."

After losing dad, so many people reached out to tell us how he impacted their lives. They also said that he left a legacy that lives on not only with his family but students as well.

Dad said the things of real value in his life were his faith, family, friends, and to those he dedicated his career in education. He also valued athletics as a positive vehicle as he spent many years coaching as well.

Please help us honor one of my dad's last requests and his memory.

Dad was loved by many and will be dearly missed by those who were blessed to have known him.

I love you always and forever dad!
