The Resilience Scholarship Fund
Dan Weckstein was a beloved husband, father, and friend who battled grade IV glioblastoma brain cancer from diagnosis on 6/20/15 until his death on 8/28/18.
Dan was a passionate educator for years before diagnosis. As a parent, and in his role as principal of Oakwood Junior High School in Dayton, Ohio he worked to teach (and lead by example) the importance of RESILIENCE. An annual scholarship was created in 2018 in his honor, awarding $1,000 to a high school senior who has faced a personal or family medical obstacle with "Dan Weckstein-like" RESILIENCE. The resilience and bravery he showed in the face of his cancer inspired the OJHS Student Council to fund a scholarship to honor students facing similar challenges and to motivate them to live every day with courage.
The Weckstein family and friends immediately recognized the importance of celebrating RESILIENCE and believes a scholarship program as such can be important for school districts beyond Oakwood. In January 2019, The Resilience Scholarship Fund was established to move forward this initiative. This "gofundme" site was the first step in establishing the fund and expanding the reach of this celebration of RESILIENCE to a national scale. It is open-ended so please contribute as part of your annual donation plans.
