Running blind

Donation protected

Update: Fun Run completed, what an experience it was. Please continute to donate, we will keep this page up for awhile!

For the 2017 Canberra Times Fun Run on September 3rd, I (Joshua Chu-Tan) will be running a full 10 km completely blind with a colleague guiding me. Other members of the lab (Riccardo Natoli, Nilisha Fernando, Riemke Aggio-Bruce, Tanja Racic and Helen Jiao) will be doing the 5 km either blind or as guides. We are doing this as an attempt to really connect more and further understand what it is that vision loss patients have to go through on a daily basis and the realities of what it is we are researching and trying to fight against. If running 10 km blind is incredibly difficult, imagine living the rest of your life without vision. Through this event, we hope to raise awareness on how Australians are affected by vision loss and hope you all can help contribute to this campaign.

If you were asked, what was the one sense that you couldn't live without, most of you would have immediately thought of your sight. That is because our vision plays an integral role into how we perceive the world around us. Without research into the prevention of vision loss from retinal degenerations itis guaranteed that 1 in 7 people will lose the sense of sight.

Research led by Dr. Riccardo Natoli and his research team (including PhD candidate, Joshua Chu-Tan) focuses on what causes the retina, the part of the eye responsible for converting light to an electrical signal that our brain can understand, to degenerate with age. This degeneration can lead to irreparable loss of retinal cells causing permanent blindness. We have a 'Clear Vision' of what is required to reduce the progression of these diseases, and have developed a number of potential gene therapies which could prevent retinal degenerations. Only through support of our research can we further develop these therapeutics and contribute to the eradication of blindness.

How will your donations help?

Every cent of your gift will directly support our work at the ANU with the ultimate goal of Clear Vision Research to be able to support our next generation of researchers by helping them move through the incredibly difficult transition from a PhD student to a bona fide researcher. We need funds to keep these bright, young minds in medical research asking and answering the pertinent questions that can help us find a cure for retinal degenerations and fight vision loss. Please see our website for more information on our work: https://www.clearvisionresearch.com/

Why "Clear Vision"?

Our mission is clear. To eradicate all forms of retinal degenerations including Age-Related Macular Degeneration, enabling all members of our global society to share in our clear vision. Help us, and be a part of our cause.
