The Brownsville Cultural Coalition has been activitely advocating to re-adapt and preserve Our Lady of Loreto in Brownsville, Brooklyn. It has been a long journey with no cooperation from the Diocese of Brooklyn or Councilmember Rafael Espinal. We have been working to successfully make this building a civic space for Brownsville, a cultural and artistic revitalizer while restoring and preserving this important architecural and historic landmark. We have the support of elected officials, such as Borough President Eric Adams, Senator, Senator Jesse Hamilton, Senator Tony Avella and Assemblywoman Latrice Walker. Even with political support the Diocese of Brooklyn and Catholic Charities has refused to work with us. In the past the building has been neglected purposely for the sole mission to demolish this building against opposition from the community, NY State and elected officials. We even tried to make Our Lady of Loreto a NYC Landmark but that has purposely blocked by the Diocese, Catholic Charities and most importantly Councilman Rafael Espinal, who sole support is needed.
We are now in a legal case and taking the Diocese to court. The Diocese needs to remove itself fom the real estate business venture and get back to building communities and faith. We are outmatched in funds against the Diocese/Catholic Charities, They have deep pockets for many the legal cases against them in the past and present. Until now the Coalition has been operating at low costs but now more than ever we are asking for your support in having the chance to stand up for what's right for the Brownsville Community, New York City, this buildings architecture and history, people's faith and the future.
