Save New Generation Health Center

New Generation Health Center is the only free, reproductive health center that primarily serves youth and young adults of color from the most under-served neighborhoods in San Francisco.

We are nurses, health educators, community members, activists, students, and patients who will not stand by and watch as New Generation Health Center is forced to close its doors. We are asking that members of the Bay Area community and reproductive justice advocates nationwide stand with us to save the last full-scope reproductive health center serving marginalized Black and Latino youth in San Francisco.

Without your help, this beloved community resource is slated to close in June 2017. After over 20 years of building trust with SF’s teens and young adults, New Generation Health Center’s survival is threatened by a funding crisis and required seismic retrofitting. As of June 2017, the clinic’s administrator, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), will no longer support the yearly operating costs of the clinic.

New Generation Health Center empowers youth and young adults to make informed, positive decisions about their health and future, particularly related to their sexual health. The clinic provides confidential, youth-friendly clinical services and educational programs to young women and men in San Francisco’s highest risk communities.

These services include same day or next day appointments for one-on-one client-centered counseling, birth control, sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnosis and treatment, pregnancy testing and options counseling, and emergency contraception.
80% of patients are below the federal poverty line, 92% are people of color, 76% are uninsured, and 64% come from the Mission, Bayview/Hunters Point, and the southeast communities; the neighborhoods with the highest STI and teen pregnancy rates in the city.

Nationwide, reproductive health is under attack. People of color and immigrant communities are under attack. In San Francisco, low-income families are being priced out of the city.

As Jessica Calderon, 21, who co-chairs the San Francisco Youth Commission’s youth justice committee, said in an email to the SF Chronicle, “Closing this clinic is just another step toward supporting the gentrification of our city and moving toward a new faux progressive San Francisco that is ultimately unfriendly for the young women and men of color”.

We need to return to the highest ideals of our nation and our city--ideals of inclusion, equity, and opportunity. We need to take a stand and say that the health and the lives of young people of color matter.

Message from New Gen Patients

“I’ve been a patient at New Gen since I was 13 years old. They introduced us to the clinic when I was in middle school at Everett Middle School. The outreach program helped me beyond words with protecting myself sexually. Once I really started having sex, the staff became like family. They were there through STDs, break-ups, and even were an open ear when I needed. This clinic is a family to a lot of women and gentlemen who have no one else to turn to. It would be like losing a loved one to lose the clinic and even the patients are like family. We all have been here for years. We met here, bonded here, and will always remember New Gen as the place where our family started.”

“Please don’t go! New Generation to me is years of secrets with your best friend.  It’s talks and words of encouragement without judgment. It’s radiant smiles greeting me, a world without attitude. A safe haven. It’s knowing you have someone who always has your best in mind. ““It’s not money—it’s people’s real lives and health on the line! Do NOT close this place!!! Not a good idea!”

“No other clinic provides the comfort and feel that NGHC gives. I have tried other clinics and they all had me feel as if I was just a number not even a person. All the staff is very informative and knowledgeable. I definitely would have to say they show great concern, not just in my sexual health, but my overall health all together. I always recommend this place to everyone I know without hesitation. New Generation is one place that offers an ear and great advice. I will be heartbroken to see this place go.”

“Stay open! It’s going to suck having to find a new place to trust. Many high school students in SF only know about New Gen and trust it more than Planned Parenthood.”

“New Generation is one of those small treasures that you don’t come across very often, if at all. Being a young woman without health insurance and proper access to reproductive health care can be really scary. Yet I feel so lucky to have been referred to New Generation. The environment is safe, friendly and all inclusive, and it would be a shame to have let all this go."
