Help save our Teen Center

We need your help.

We are in serious jeopardy of losing our Teen Center due to severe funding cuts from the State of Vermont.

The Teen Center is a part of a division of Northeast Kingdom Community Action, a not-for-profit,  located in downtown Newport, VT and is a “hub” for local youths from ages 12 through 21. This grant covered our Teen Center Coordinator’s position, Youth in Transition Program, and kept the lights on in our Teen center amounting to about $55,000.

Another major grant, our 11 year SSRHY grant, which stands for Supported Services for Homeless and Youth Programs, has also recently ended which has greatly widened the hole. The purpose of this grant was to strengthen and initiate projects in our community and assist youths with support. 200+ youths in our community were surveyed and asked “what do you want?”. With their ideas we used this grant to help pay for

- NEKCA Teen Drop-in Center
- Youth housing/transitional housing
- Youth employment specialist from VABIR
- Substance abuse counselor from NEKHS
-“Things to do” to stay out of trouble including the skate park, and various activities with Newport Parks and Rec (Dive-in movies, Laser tag, etc.)
- Health care needs

What is our Teen Center?

Our Teen Center is a “hub”.  We are located in downtown Newport  and provide a safe place for youth ages 12-21 to relax, hang out, play pool, basketball or Wii, eat and have fun.  The center is staffed by youth workers who make connections with participants and provide activities, meals, referrals, advocacy, and education in a non-judgmental manner.

The philosophy of our Teen Drop-in Center is based on an individual’s potential for positive growth and change toward self-reliance. We are committed to providing emotional, educational, nutritional and peer assistance to young adults who want to improve the quality of their lives.

We are located in an economically depressed area, and this Teen Center means a lot to our youth.

What is our Youth in Transition program?

Helping young people to achieve a constructive and rewarding adulthood is the overarching goal of Community Action Youth Services (CAYS). CAYS provides employment, housing, crisis intervention, outreach and youth development services for young people in Orleans and northern Essex counties, focusing on young people who may be or at risk of becoming homeless, dropping out of high school, experimenting with drugs, be a runaway, and also kids that are poorly prepared for workplace, lack life skills, basic needs and feel disconnected from their community.

With your help we can continue to provide services and support to local youths.

Last year our programs provided 141 youth with housing, support, and services. 96% of the youths successfully completed and exited our programs.
